Player Profile - Benny Green

Benjamin Haigh (Benny) Green was born in Penistone on 23 February 1883. Green played in the Inside-Right position and started his career with Penistone Juniors.

The 1901/02 season saw Green join Second Division Barnsley scoring twice in 10 league appearances. The following season saw Green top score for the Tykes with 16 goals from 30 appearances, 6 more than Frank Cornan.

A further 6 matches in 1903/04 took his total to 46 league appearances and 18 goals before joining First Division Small Heath. He scored 10 goals in each of the 1904/05 and in 1905/06, when the club was renamed Birmingham; he only missed two matches during both these seasons as the club finished seventh on both occasions. Five of his 10 goals in the 1905/06 season came in one match as Middlesbrough were beaten 7-0 on Boxing Day

The 1906/07 saw Green an ever-present again; scoring 9 goals, one of these goals won him a piano when he scored the first goal at their new ground St. Andrews, three days after it opened. The score was 3-0 win against Preston on 29 December 1906.

The 1907/08 season saw Birmingham relegated at the end of the season with Green scoring 8 goals.

After the end of the 1908/09 season saw Green go to another second Division side in Burnley after scoring 44 goals in 185 league appearances.

Green stayed for two seasons with Burnley and was top scorers for the club in both seasons with 18 goals in 34 appearances in 1909/10 and 11 goals in 37 appearances in 1910/11.

The 1911/12 season saw Green join Preston and scored on debut in the opening match of the season as he scored the only goal at Sheffield Wednesday. Although he scored 10 in total including a brace in a 4-1 victory over Aston Villa, Preston were relegated to Division Two with Green playing 36 of the 38 matches.

Preston made an immediate return to Division One as Green finished top scorer with 13 goals from 30 appearances. He scored one brace in a 2-2 draw at Burney. Burney were also promoted at the end of the season as they finished runners-up to the Lilywhites, three points behind.

Green struggled in 1913/14 and made the last of his appearances in a 2-0 defeat at Sheffield United on 6 December 1913 he had scored 23 goals from 73 appearances.

Green finished his career with Blackpool making 10 appearances for the remainder of the 1913/14 season. In the last season before the First World War, Green scored 4 goals in 21 league appearances.
