Player Profile Lee Ashcroft

Lee Ashcroft

Lee Ashcroft was born in Preston on 7 September 1972 and came through the youth ranks at his home town club.

Ashcroft got his first chance at Preston under Les Chapman, making his league debut as a substitute for Adrian Hughes in a 2-1 defeat at Wigan 0n 3 November 1990. His first start was in January 1991 in a 4-1 win at Scunthorpe in the Leyland Daf Cup.

His first goal was in a 2-1 defeat at Tranmere on 7 May 1991.

In the 1991/92 season Ashcroft scored 5 goals in 38 appearances and obtained is one and only England Under 21 cap in Budapest on 12 May 1992, coming on as a substitute against Hungary in a 2-2 draw.

The 1992/93 season saw the departure of Chapman and replaced by John Beck as PNE were relegated to the fourth tier.

In August 1993, Ashcroft left Preston for West Brom for a fee of £250,000 after scoring 13 goals from 91 appearances for the Lilywhites.

Ashcroft scored 3 goals in 21 appearances for West Brom in 1993/94. Although the last of these was vital as he headed home the winner at Portsmouth on the last day of the season to keep Albion in Division One.

The next season Ashcroft reached double figures with ten goals but saw his goals dry up in 1995/96 and was loaned to second division side Notts County for six games.

In September1996, Ashcroft returned to Preston on loan before transferring for £150,000 in two months later. For Albion Ashcroft had scored 17 goals from 90 appearances.

His transfer in November sparked six goals from his first seven appearances. The following season in 1997/98 Ashcroft was Preston's leading scorer with 16 goals in all competitions including an hat-trick in a 3-1 win against Fulham on 29 November 1997. In March 1998 he rejected a move to Wigan and scored his 50 goal against the Latics. He scored in a 2-1 win at home to Bristol City on the final day of the season, which turned out to be the last game for the club. His second spell had netted 22 goals from 64 appearances.

In August 1998 Ashcroft joined first division Grimsby Town for £500,000, this record fee for Grimsby still stands today. His debut was on 15 August 1998 in a 2-0 defeat at Bolton and his first season ended with just 3 goals from 27 appearances. The following season he built a strong partnership with Jack Lester and scored 12 goals. But the transfer of his partner led to a bust up with the Grimsby manager Alan Buckley and was put on the transfer list. Ashcroft has scored 15 goals from 61 appearances.

Ashcroft returned to Lancashire in August 2000 to join Wigan for £350,000 but injuries limited him to 8 goals from 46 appearances. He had loan spells with Port Vale in October 2002 and Hudderfield two months later making a total of seven appearances. On 6 February 2003 Ashcroft was released from his contract at Wigan .

Later that month Ashcroft joined non-league Southport as player-coach. After a spell with Chorley on loan he joined Northwich Victoria in February 2004.

Ashcroft then moved to Kendal Town and scored 23 goals in the 2004/05 season. In November 2006, Ashcroft, the club captain was appointed manager.
