Leon Terence Anthony Cort was born in Bermondsey, London on 11 September 1979

Cort began his career at local non-League side Dulwich Hamlet. He was invited by Mick Beard to trial at Millwall before signing pro-forms with his local league club Millwall in 1998. His career at The New Den never really took off, and joined Conference side Forest Green Rovers and made his debut in a 3-1 defeat to Stevenage Borough and made 12 Conference appearances for the club. Cort moved to Stevenage on loan and made his debut in a 2-1 victory at Morcambe  on 31 March 2001 and made 8 appearances for Stevenage

Cort joined Southend on a free transfer on 7 July 2001 and made his debut in a 1-0 home win over Darlington on 11 August.  Eleven days later, on his third appearance, he was sent off in the last minute in  a 3-0 defeat at Birmingham. His first of four goals in the 2001/02 season came on Boxing day with a 4-2 win over Rushden.

While at Southend, Cort earned rave reviews and was tipped for greater things. He became a regular in the side, achieving a remarkable feat of appearing in 130 consecutive league matches without missing any through injury or suspension. Ort also scored a hat-trick in a 4-2 win at home to Boston on 14 December 2002.

In May 2004, Cort was offered a new contract at Southend but soon, Hull  manager Peter Taylor said he would be interested in signing Cort. His last game for the club came in a 2-1 home defeat to Torquay on 8 May 2004 after scoring 11 goals in 137 matches

Cort moved to newly promoted League One side Hull  in the summer of 2004, again on a free transfer. His Hull debut was a 1-0 home win against Bournemouth on 7 August 2004. His first Tigers goal came in a 3-2 win at Peterborough on 18 September 2004. He netted 6 goals in 44 matches as  Hull were promoted again that season, to The Championship, and in this division Cort excelled himself as Hull survived comfortably. At the end of the season, Cort signed a two-year extensions. In a game between Hull and his  younger  brother Carl's team Wolves in on 25 February 2006, both players scored for their respective teams with Carl scoring an 89th minute winner.

His last Hull match was a 0-0 draw at Watford on 30 April 2006 after 86 league matches and 10 goals. At the end of that season manager Peter Taylor departed to Crystal Palace and made Cort his first signing for £1.25m, and gave him a return to his native South London.

His Palace debut came in a 2-1 win at Ipswich on 5 August 2006, three days later Cort scored on his home debut in a 3-1 win against Southend. He again impressed and became popular with the Palace fans, netting 7 league goals and winning the Player of the Year Award in 2007. The following season started poorly for the Eagles and saw Taylor sacked and replaced by Neil Warnock, and Cort soon departed on loan to Stoke. Ironically, Cort's last game for Palace was at Selhurst Park against Stoke with the visitors winning 3-1 on 23 October 2007 after 7 goals in 49 League matches.

Cort's  debut was a 3-1 home loss to Coventry  on 3 November but his career at the Britannia Stadium began very well, with assured performances featuring a remarkable tally of eight goals in just six months from the defender including a brace in a 3-1 win at home to Preston on 19 January 2008. Five Days earlier Cort had joined Stoke for a fee of £1.2million

Stoke had been promoted to the Premier League and his first top flight match was  a 3-1 defeat at Bolton on 16 August but only made a further 10 league appearances during that season. Cort found himself further down the pecking order as Ryan Shawcross and Abdoulaye Faye was preferred to be used in central defence.

The 2009/10 season saw him just make 3 Carling Cup appearances and his final Stoke match was a 3-1 FA Cup victory over York on 2 January 2010, his two spells totalled 8 goals in 44 league appearances.

Cort signed for Premier League side Burnley on 27 January 2010 for £1.5 million signing a three-and-a-half-year deal. His Claret’s debut came in a 2-1 defeat at Turf Moor against Chelsea on 30 January, Cort provided his first assist in the Premier League for former PNE player David Nugent in a 3–1 loss against Arsenal on 6 March.

However, after the Clarets were relegated, he found opportunities limited after reduced of playing time. Cort was sent off in a 4-0 home defeat to Reading on 23 October which was his last Burney match after making 19 league appearances.

On 25 November 2010, Cort joined Preston on a month long loan. Two days later he made his debut in a 0–0 draw against Millwall. His only Lilywhite win in 13 league matches came on this third appearance over Ipswich on 11 December with a 1-0 home win. On 1 January 2011, Cort loan spell at Preston has extended until 23 January and played his last match for North End in a 1-0 home defeat against Cardiff on 25 April 2011.

On 29 August 2011, Cort was once again sent out on loan, this time to Charlton . Cort made his debut for the club in a 2-0 home defeat against the previous loan club Preston in the Carling Cup on 13 September 2011. While at loan at Charlton, Cort only made three league appearances due to good central defence performance from Michael Morrison and Matt Taylor. Cort was released by Burnley on 9 January 2012 after not making appearance for the club that season. On 12 January 2012, Cort signed a permanent deal with Charlton. From late March to nearly end of April, Cort able to get more playing time and led the club promoted to the Championship, making 15 appearances in total.

On 18 August 2012, Cort scored his first league goal for The Addicks, on the opening day of the Championship season, in the 1–1 draw with Birmingham. His second and last goal for Charlton came in a 2-0 win at Blackpool on 6 October. On 16 May 2013, Cort signed a one-year contract extension but made only a further three league appearances, his last match was a 3-2 home win over Yeovil on 8 April. On 22 May 2014, he was released from Charlton , making 48 appearances and 2 league goals in his Addick spell.

Following his release from Charlton, Cort began training with his former club Southend but announced his retirement in July 2014.
