Player Profile RAY TRACEY

Raymond Christopher Patrick Tracey was born in Dublin on 18 June 1946. He stated his career with Home Farm in Ireland before moving to England in 1964 for his first spell with West Brom .

Tracey only made 5 appearances for the First Division club, scoring 1 goal before transferring to Second Division Charlton in February 1968 for £20,000.

Tracey made a total of 48 appearances for Charlton in the 1967/68 and 1968/69 seasons, scoring 17 goals. Tracey played a further 3 seasons for Charlton. After scoring 6 goals in 30 appearances in 1969/70 and 7 goals in 33 appearances in 1970/71, he again reached double figures by scoring 14 goals in 38 appearances. Unfortunately this wasn't enough as Charlton was relegated to Division Three by one point.

After 149 appearances and 44 goals for Charlton, Tracey joined Second Division side Swindon for a fee of £35,000.

In his first season for Swindon he again reached double figures by scoring 13 goals in 40 appearances. The 1973/74 season saw Tracey make 15 appearances, scoring 3 goals before transferring to Preston for £30,000.

As a forward Tracey always seamed to score against Preston but was used for the remainder of the 1973/74 as a midfielder. Tracey made his PNE debut in a 3-0 defeat at Middlesbrough on 11 December 1973 and made 20 appearances in the season for PNE which saw Preston relegated with his former club Swindon to Division Three.

Injuries limited him to just 10 appearances in 1974/75 season and joined Oldham on loan in March 1975, scoring 1 goal from 3 appearances.

The 1975/76 season saw Tracey revert back to a striker and scored his first goals for the club with a brace in the 2-1 opening day victory against Colchester. The first month of the season saw Tracey score 7 goals in all competitions from 8 matches. Tracey had scored 11 goals during the season from 28 appearances before he fell out with manager Harry Catterick. His last appearance was in a 2-0 home defeat to Mansfield on 28 February 1976. Tracey had made 58 appearances for the Lilywhites.

In August 1976 Tracey returned to his old club West Brom making 21 appearances and scoring 6 goals for the First Division side in 1976/77.

After West Brom, Tracey returned to Ireland to play for Shamrock Rovers for three seasons and was leading scorer in two of them. He later played for Drogheda United and managed Home Farm and Shamrock Rovers.

In a 13 year international career Tracey made his Eire debut on 4 May 1966 in a 4-0 defeat at home to West Germany and made his last appearance on 26 September 1979
in a 4-1 defeat against Czechoslovakia . In total Tracey made 42 appearances scoring 5 goals.

Whilst at Preston, Tracey made 8 appearances for Eire scoring 1 goal, the first of these was a 2-1 defeat in Brazil on 5 April 1974. His final appearance was a 2-0 win in Poland on 25 May 1976.

Tracey stared a travel agency and has been in the trade for almost 30 years. He
is now the Football Association of Ireland's official tour operator.
