Player Profile - Gary Williams

Gary Peter Williams was born in Liverpool on 8 March 1954. He started his career with non-league Marine before joining Preston in April 1972. Williams made his Preston debut on 1 May which was the final game of the 1971/72 season as Preston drew 2-2 at home to Swindon. Also in this match saw Alex Bruce also make his debut.

The following season Williams played in the opening match against Aston Villa but had to wait until the end of March at Brighton for his second appearance.

Williams scored his two goals for Preston in the 1973/74 season, the first in a 2-1 defeat at Notts County on 20 October 1973. But his 11 appearances could not help Preston avoid relegation to Division Three.

The following season Williams made 10 appearances but the most significant part was for the last 8 games of the season saw him take over as left back.

The 1975/76 season saw Williams make 44 appearances as Preston finished ninth and won the Official Player of the Season award. The next season Preston finished one place higher in Division Three with Williams making a further 44 appearances. His 100th league appearance came in a 1-0 defeat at Crystal Palace on 22 March 1977. Williams had another outstanding season and was now being touted by higher league clubs. His last game was the final game of the 1976/77 season in a 2-1 victory at Shrewsbury on May 14 after making 112 league appearances.

In July 1977 saw Preston accept an offer from Brighton to sign Williams for £45,000 and Mark Lawrenson for £100,000. The Preston board had earlier rejected a combined £100,000 bid for both players. The money was used to sign Graham Cross and Harry Wilson from Brighton.

Williams made 34 appearances for Brighton in 1977/78 season as the Seagulls finished fourth missing promotion on goal; difference to Tottenham. The following season as Williams play every game, scoring twice as Brighton were runners-up to Crystal Palace to gain promotion to Division One.

Williams was an ever present again in 1979/80, with him netting two goals again as Brighton finished in sixteenth position.

Williams was limited to just 26 appearances in 1980/81, scoring two goals including one penalty as Brighton just avoided relegation by one position and two points. His last season for Brighton was in 1981/82, scoring once in 14 appearances as the Seagulls finished in fourteenth position.

After netting 7 goals in 158 appearances Williams joined Second Division Crystal Palace. But his stay was a short one as after just 10 appearances he suffered a terrible knee injury which ended his professional career.
