Player Profile - Lee Briscoe

Lee Stephen Briscoe was born in Pontefract on 30 September 1975 and began his career with Sheffield Wednesday initially as a youth player. He made his league debut for the Owls' as a substitute in a 3-1 victory at Tottenham on 5 February 1994.

Briscoe made 6 appearances in 1994/95 and the following season he played in the majority of the matches making 26 league appearances. But he did not make the progress as expected for a player who had made 5 appearances for England at Under 21 level and the following two seasons made just 13 appearances.

In February 1998 Briscoe joined Division one side Manchester City on loan and made his debut in a 3-1 win at Swindon on 21 February 2008. His fourth appearances saw Briscoe score his first goal in league football in a 3-1 win at Huddersfield on 3 March. His fifth and last appearance was four days later in a 2-0 home defeat to Oxford. Although Joe Royal wanted to sign him, Briscoe returned to Hillsborough.

The following season saw Briscoe score his one and only league goal for the Owls' on 26 September 1998 as Sheffield Wednesday beat Arsenal 1-0. Although the goal was overshadowed by Paolo Di Canio's notorious pushing incident on the referee which led to two players (Di Canio and Martin Keown) being sent off.

He made 16 appearances for both the 1998/99 season and 1999/2000. His last appearance for the Owls was on 9 May 2000 in a 3-3 draw at Arsenal. Briscoe had made 78 appearances for the Owls, all of them in the Premiership.

Briscoe joined Burnley on 12 July 2000 on a free transfer and made his debut in a 1-1 draw at Bolton on 12 August. Exactly a month later he was sent off in a 3-1 defeat at Fulham and went on to make 29 appearances during the season.

He was almost an ever-present in 2001/02 making 44 appearances and netting 5 goals; he scored his first goal for the Clarets in a 4-2 home defeat against former club Manchester City on 27 August. In his next match at Turf Moor, Briscoe scored a brace in a space of three minutes, coming on as a substitute in a 5-2 victory over Walsall on 15 September.

His final appearance for the clarets came in a 2-0 defeat at Norwich on 12 April 2003 after making 106 league appearances with 7 goals.

Briscoe joined Preston on a one year deal on 22 July 2003 but had to wait until 27 March 2004 for his debut in a 1-0 defeat at Rotherham due to a persistent hamstring injury which had led to an operation. His second start in a 3-3 draw at MK Dons was his last for the Lilywhites as a back injury finished his season and led to his retirement from the game.
