Player Profile - Danny Cameron

Daniel Cameron was born in Dundee on 9 November 1953 and was an apprentice with Sheffield Wednesday who signed professional forms in July 1971.

It took a further two years before Cameron made his first team league debut. This was in a 2-0 defeat at West Brom on 24 October 1973.

Cameron only ever scored one league goal in his career and this was also in the 1973/74 season in a 4-1 defeat against Fulham on 2 February 1974.

In total Cameron made 17 league appearances during the 1973/74 season as Wednesday narrowly avoided relegation to Division Three by one point.

The following season Cameron only made 6 league appearances for the Owls and went on loan in February 1975 to Third Division Colchester, making 5 appearances. Wednesday only won 5 of their 42 matches in the 1974/75 season and finished bottom of Division Two.

Cameron made 8 appearances for Wednesday at the start of the 1975/76 campaign, but after a 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace on 27 September, he never played for the first team again. The goal scorer for the Owls on his last match was Eric Potts, who later played alongside Cameron at Preston . In total he made 31 league appearances for Sheffield Wednesday.

In April 1975 Cameron was signed by Harry Catterick at Third Division Preston. He made his debut as a substitute for Jimmy Brown in the final match of the season in a 3-1 defeat at Hereford on 28 April 1975.

The 1976/77 season saw Cameron make 15 league appearances mainly as a replacement for John McMahon at right back.

The following season Cameron didn't play in six of the first seven league fixtures until 27 September when he replaced John McMahon. Four months later he swapped flanks to replace Harry Wilson at left back and stayed there for the remainder of the season to make a total of 40 league appearances during the season. Cameron was instrumental in helping Preston to gain promotion on goal difference at the end of the 1977/78 season as after 7 matches PNE had only won one match and stood in 18 position.

The 1978/79 season saw Cameron as an ever-present from the middle of October at left back as PNE finished 7 in Division Two, achieving their highest position for 15 years. In total Cameron made 36 league appearances during the season.

The following season Cameron made his 100 league appearance for Preston in a 1-1 draw at QPR in October 1979.

The left back duties following this appearance was covered by Wilson and a young Andy McAteer. Although he did replace Brian Taylor at right back for the last five fixtures of the season.

The 1980/81 season saw Cameron only make 13 league appearances and played the last of his 122 appearances for PNE in a 3-0 home defeat to Derby on 6 December 1980. At the time Preston were just above the relegation zone but ended up at the end of the season relegated to Division Three on goal difference.

Cameron returned home to have a short spell with Dundee in the 80's before moving to South Africa to play and coach.
