Player profile – Kevin Kilbane

Kevin Daniel Kilbane was born in Preston on 1 February 1977. He started with the youth system at Deepdale and made his Lilywhites debut in a 4-0 victory at Torquay on 14 October when he replaced Graeme Atkinson. Three days later he made his full debut in a 1-0 defeat at Hull in the Auto Windscreen Shield in front of just 793 spectators. He made his Under 21 debut for the Republic Of Ireland, making the first of nine appearances.

His first league goal came as a substitute for Ian Bryson in a 1-0 win at Wigan on 3 February 1996. He made 11 appearances during 1995/96 as PNE won the Third Division title.

Kilbane made 36 appearances in 1996/97 and scored twice in the 2-1 defeat at Bristol City on 7 September and in a 1-1 draw at Gillingham the following month. His last appearance for the club came in a 1-0 win at home to Stockport on 19 April when he was replaced by Michael Holt.

After a bid of £900,000 was rejected, PNE agreed to sell Kilbane for £1 million to become the Baggies first million pound player and break a club transfer record which had stood since 1979.

He made his Baggies debut, scoring in a 2-1 win against Tranmere on 9 August 1997. He made his full international debut against Iceland on 6 September.

Kilbane scored a further two goals in April 1998 against Sunderland and Sheffield United and scored 4 goals in total from 43 appearances during the season.

Kilbane had his most successful season in front of goal was in 1998/99 netting 6 league goals from 44 appearances.

The 1999/2000 season he scored his first brace in a 5-1 home win in the League Cup against Halifax.  On 18 September 1999 he scored his second brace in a 2-2 draw at home to Blackburn. It was against the same opposition and result at The Hawthorns saw him make his last appearance for West Brom in the FA Cup match on 11 December 1999.

After 15 goals in 106 league appearances for the Baggies, Kilbane joined Peter Reid’s Sunderland for £2.5 million in December 1999 and became the third most expensive club signing at the time. His debut was in a 2-0 win at home to Southampton on 18 December and came on as a substitute with immediate effect creating the cross for Kevin Phillips to score. Unfortunately this was their last win until March 2000 in what became called ‘The Curse of Kilbane’. His first goal for the Black Cats came in a 2-1 win against Wimbledon on 8 April.

The 2000/01 season saw him score his first International goal in a 3-0 win over Finland on 15 November and scored 4 goals during the season in 30 appearances.

The 2002/03 season saw Sunderland rooted to the bottom of the Premier League with just 19 points and after five games in Division One in 2003/04 Kilbane was reunited with David Moyes as he joined Everton for £750,000. He had scored 8 goals from 113 appearances for Sunderland.

Kilbane scored on his Toffees debut in a 2-0 victory over Wolves on 22 November 2003 and scored a further two goals in 29 appearances in 2003/04. The following season he was an ever-present and became the first Everton outfielder to achieve this in 13 yearsand also won FAI Player of the Year. During his time with the club Moyes had played him right across the midfield, right back and as a support striker.

He was sent off in his last appearances for Everton in a 2-0 win at Spurs on 26 August 2006 after scoring 4 goals in 104 appearances.

Kilbane joined Wigan for an estimated fee of £2 million and made his debut in a quick return to Goodison Park as Wigan drew 2-2 on 16 September 2006.

On 15 April 2007 he scored his first goal for Wigan with a header in a 3-3 draw against Spurs. This was his first club goal since October 2004. The 2007/08 Kilbane played in  a more unfamiliar role as left back but his performances earned him a player of the year award.

Kilbane scored twice in 76 appearances but found opportunities limited due to Maynor Figueroa, before playing his final game for the club on 2 January 2009 in a 3-1 FA Cup defeat at Spurs.

Kilbane joined Hull on 15 January 2009 for a fee believed to be £500,000 on a 2.5 year contract and has appeared in over 30 league matches for the club so far.

Kilbane has made more International appearances for Republic of Ireland than any one else as the friendly match against Brazil on 3 March 2010 was his 103rd cap.
