Player Profile – Danny Dichio

 

Daniele Salvatore Ernest Dichio was born in Hammersmith on 19 October 1974. Dichio represented England schoolboys at the age of 15 in 2 matches against Northern Ireland and France.

 

Dichio joined QPR on YTS terms but suffered a back injury early in his career. He went on loan to Welling United and scored 4 goals on debut in a 6-2 win against Slough on 19 February 1993.

 

In March 1994 Dichio joined Division Two side Barnet on loan and scored twice in 9 appearances. He made his league debut with Barnet in a 5-2 defeat at Bristol Rovers on 26 March 1994. His first goal came on his third appearance and his home debut in a 1-1 draw against Brighton on 2 April. His second and last goal for Barnet came in the 3-2 home win over Hartlepool on 26 April. Dichio’s final Barnet match was a 1-1 draw at Rotherham on 7 May.

 

Seven months later Dichio made his QPR debut in a 4-3 defeat at home to QPR in the League Cup on 25 October 1994. In his second match Dichio scored against Aston Villa on his Premiership debut. Dichio also scored on his next appearance on 5 November in a 2-1 defeat at Newcastle The 1994/95 season saw Dichio score 3 goals in 9 appearances.

 

The following season saw Dichio partner Kevin Gallen and scored 10 goals in 29 appearances, scoring a brace twice. The first in a 3-1 win at Leeds and again the following month in a 3-2 home defeat against Newcastle. But the 1995/96 season saw QPR relegated from the Premiership. Although Dichio did win an England under 21 cap and was voted QPR young player of the season.

 

The 1996/97 season saw Dichio make 39 appearances, scoring 7 goals including one in his final appearance for QPR on 26 April 1997 in a 2-0 win at home to Tranmere. Dichio had scored 20 goals from 75 appearances.

 

After his contract ended Dichio had a choice of three Italian clubs and joined Sampdoria, who was managed by Sven Goran Eriksson. But prior to the start of the season Eriksson joined Lazio and replaced by Carlos Menotta. Dichio made his Sampdoria debut in a UEFA Cup defeat against Athletico Bilbao but didn’t fit in the new manager’s plans.

 

Dichio joined Lecce on loan and made his debut in the San Siro against AC Milan and scored on his home debut against Brescia.

 

In January 1991, Dichio returned to England and joined Sunderland as cover for Niall Quinn for a fee of £750,000 and made his debut on 28 January in a 2-1 defeat at Norwich as a substitute for Nicky Summerbee.

 

The 1998/99 season saw Sunderland win the First Division Championship with 105 points. Dichio’s first goals for Sunderland was a brace in a 2-0 League Cup win at York. His first league goals was to score two of the five against Tranmere on 22 August. Dichio scored two more in a 7-0 win to Oxford the following month. In total Dichio scored 10 league goals in 36 appearances.

 

A back injury limited to just 27 appearances in the next two seasons, his last match was a 2-0 defeat at home to Leeds on 31 March 2001. In total Dichio made 76 appearances, although 56 of these were from the bench, scoring 11 goals. 

 

In August 2001 Dichio joined West Brom, initially on loan. He scored on his debut in a 1-1 draw at Sheffield Wednesday on 25 August and on his home debut two days later in a 1-0 win against Gillingham. In total he scored 9 league goals in 2001/02 as West Brom finished runners up to ManchesterCity.

 

The following season saw West Brom relegated although Dichio was the top scorer for West Brom with 8 goals, including a hat-trick in a 3-1 win against Bradford in the FA Cup.

 

In October 2003, Dichio joined Derby on loan and made his debut in a 3-0 defeat at Crewe. He made a total of 6 appearances and scored one goal in a 2-2 draw at home to Ipswich.

 

Dichio made four further league appearances for West Brom his last match was a 1-1 draw at home to West Ham on 6 December 2003. Dichio had scored 14 goals in 66 appearances.

 

Dichio joined Championship side Millwall initially on loan in January 2004, scoring twice on his debut in a 2-1 win over Sunderland on 17 January. He scored twice in his next match in a 2-1 win at Crewe. After scoring 5 goals in 5 games Dichio signed permanently for £205,000 on 16 February 2004.

 

Dichio scored the winner in the Fifth Round of the FA Cup against Burnley and in the victories in the Quarter and Semi Finals against Tranmere and Sunderland. Although he missed the FA Cup Final following a sending off in the Championship match at NottinghamForest.

 

In total Dichio scored 17 goals in 46 matches for Millwall. His last game for the club was a 2-1 win at home to Preston on 24 April 2005.

 

On 7 July 2005 Dichio joined Preston for a fee of £160,000 and made his debut in a 1-1 draw at home to Derby on 8 August 2005. Although he created chances for his team mates he could not score a league goal during the 33 appearances he made in 2005/06. Dichio did score for Preston in the League Cup against Barnsley in August 2005 and twice in a 2-1 win at CrystalPalace in a FA Cup Fourth Round Replay.

 

In his 42nd league match Dichio scored his first league goal in a 4-1 win at home to Sunderland on 14 October 2006. Dichio then scored a goal in his next two home games in wins against Hull and Leeds.

 

His final match was Preston was in the 3-2 home defeat against Southend on 9 April 2007. He had made 63 appearances, scoring 5 goals.

 

As his contact was due to finish at the end of the 2006/07 season, Paul Simpson allowed him to be released early to join newly created Major League Soccer Canadian side Toronto FC.  Dichio became an instant hero by scoring their first goal before being sent off. The Toronto fans, sing a song in his honour in the 24th minute of each game, commemorating his inaugural goal for the franchise (scored at 23:13 on 12 May 2007 vs. Chicago Fire). Dichio also has the record of scoring the club’s first away goal.

 

Although Toronto finished bottom of their MLS League East, Dichio ended the season as top scorer for Toronto with 6 goals. He scored the last goal of the 2007 campaign with an injury time goal in a 2-2 draw against New England Revolution on 20 October. He came on as a substitute at half time and was his first appearance since 25 August after recovering from a torn foot muscle.

 

Over the next three seasons, Dichio made 59 league appearances for Toronto and Canadian Championship and CONCACAF Champions League games. Dichio also cemented his association with the Thornhill Soccer Club, a non-profit club that organises soccer leagues for age groups 4 and up, including adult leagues. On 18 March 2009, he announced his intention retire after the 2009 Major League Soccer season and to continue living in Toronto while also pursuing coaching opportunities. However, on 9 September 2009, Dichio officially announced his retirement with six games remaining on Toronto FC's season schedule. His new role with the team was as Toronto FC Team Ambassador, participating in local community appearances, and Academy Coach, where he assisted on coaching all three Toronto FC sides.

 

He became a permanent resident of Canada in April 2009. In mid-2009, he began working with the Toronto FC Academy.

 

Following the firing of head coach Preki in September 2010, Nick Dasovic was named interim head coach, and Dichio became an assistant coach. With new management put in place during the off season-Aron Winter as head coach and Bob de Klerk as assistant-Dichio moved within the club and was named head coach of the TFC Academy U-18 team. Dichio replaced former coach Jason Bent, who was with the Academy for three years before being promoted as Winter's second assistant.

 

Dichio is also the Technical Director for Thornhill Soccer Club as well as an analyst on Fox Soccer News.
