Player Profile – Fred Fox

 

 

Frederick Samuel Fox was born in Highworth on 22 November 1898. Fox was a goalkeeper and started his career with his local club Swindon during the First World War.

 

After the end of the War, Fox joined Abertillery before joining Preston in the summer of 1921. He made 3 appearances for the Lilywhites in October 1921 but was not on the winning side once. His debut was in a 1-1 draw at Manchester United on 1 October; his next appearance was a week later with the same score at home to Liverpool. On 15 October was his a third and final appearance was in a return match at Liverpool with the home side winning 4-0.

 

He joined Gillingham in 1922 and madehis debut in a 3-0 defeat at Brighton on 7 October 1922. His first win was a week later in the reverse fixture with a 2-0 victory and kept 11clean sheets in 29 matches and kept 12 clean sheets in 41 matches in 1923/24. Fox made 104 appearances for the club in three seasons with 13 clean sheets in 1924/25, His last match was a 0-0 draw at Bristol Rovers on 18 April 1925.

 

In 1925 Fox joined Millwall and made 28 appearances for the club in two seasons with 8 clean sheets. His debut was a 2-1 win at Crystal Palace on 29 August 1925. His last was a 1-1 draw at home to Bournemouth on 6 November 1927.

 

Fox then moved to Halifax for one season in 1927/28, making 17 appearances with just 0ne clean sheet with a goalless draw at Bradford City.

 

Fox joined Brentford in 1928/29 and made his debut in a 2-0 defeat at Walsall on 3 November. After four defeats Fox got his first League win for the Bees on his fifth attempt with a 5-1 home Boxing Day win over Brighton. Although a month earlier he had tasted victory against the same opposition in the FA Cup First Round He kept two clean sheets with home matches against Southend & Torquay in 13 matches.

 

Fox was an ever present in 1929/30 playing in all 42 matches as Brentford finished 2nd in Division Three South with 14 clean sheets

 

His final season with Brentford was finishing 3rd in 1930/31 in Division Three South, and for the second season running missed out on promotion as only the Champions were promoted to Division Two. He made 19 appearances with 3 clean sheets during the season to take his Bees total to 74 League Matches.

 

His last three matches were played over three days between 25 to 27 December with varying results. Fox started with a 8-2 home win over Crystal Palace before a 5-1defeat at Palace the following day. His final league match was a 1-0 home loss to Luton.

 

He received one England Cap in 1925 in a 3-2 victory over France, which saw him get injured in the match when he was barged into the net.

 

Fred Fox died in 1968.
