Player Profile – Willie Watson

 

William Thomas Watson was born in Swansea on 11 June 1918. Watson was a full-back and first played for Preston during the Second World War.

 

He made 24 appearances during the two Northern Divisions in 1944/45, scoring once and two goals from 15 matches in 1945/46.

 

His official debut came during the FA Cup competition in 1945/46 in a 3-1 home victory against Manchester United on 30 January 1946. His league debut for PNE came on the opening day of the return of the football league. A 3-2 win over Leeds on 31 August 1946 which also saw the debut of Sir Tom. Watson played in the first seven matches before being replaced in the number six shirt by Willie Hamilton.

 

Watson had to wait over six months for his next match as the Lilywhites drew 0-0 at home to Liverpool on 7 April 1947. He then played a further eight matches, with his fifteenth appearance being his last in a 4-2 defeat at Aston Villa on 17 May.  

 

Watson then returned to South Wales in October 1947 and made just one league appearance for Cardiff during the 1947/48 season in a 1-1 draw at home to Coventry on 15 November 1947 before being released by the Bluebirds. He passed away in 1978.
