Gavin John Ward was born on 30 June 1970 and over his league career he signed for sixteen different clubs.

Ward started with Aston Villa before moving to Shrewsbury in September 1988 and then to West Brom a year later. Ward only stayed for a month before joining Cardiff in October 1989 after not making a league appearance for his first three clubs.

Appearances were limited in the first two seasons as he was the understudy to Roger Hansbury. He made two appearances in 1989/90 as Cardiff was relegated to Division Four and a substitute appearance the following season. He won a regular place in the 1991/92 season making 24 league appearances and became first choice in 1992/93 with 32 league appearances as the Bluebirds won the Third Division Championship.

After making 59 appearances for Cardiff, Ward joined Leicester for a fee of £175,000 in July 1993. Leicester were promoted to the Premier League via the play offs in the 1993/94 season and made 32 appearances. But just 6 in the Premier league the following season as he was second choice to Kevin Poole. Leicester was one of four clubs relegated at the end of the 1994/95 season

Ward joined Second Division Bradford in July 1995 for £175,000. He made 36 League appearances for Bradford before joining Premier League Bolton as understudy to Keith Branagan for a fee of £300,000. Due to Bolton’s relegation and Bradford’s promotion via the playoffs meant that both clubs would meet each other in 1996/97.

He only made 28 appearances for Bolton before leaving to join Stoke in February 1999. In the meantime he had joined Burnley on loan in August 1998. He made 17 appearances for the Clarets but a lack of funds meant that the move couldn’t be made permanent.

Ward help the Potters win the Auto Windscreens Shield in his first season and was an ever-present in 1999/2000 but appearances were limited after suffering a back injury which kept him out for six months.

After two failed play-off challenges he made the last of his 10 league appearances in 2001/02 as Stoke were promoted from Division Two via the play offs. He made 79 league appearances for Stoke in total before signing for Walsall in August 2002. Ward made 7 league appearances for Walsall before joining Coventry a year later. During the 2003/04 season Ward made 12 appearances for Coventry and one appearance for Barnsley on loan in April 2004.

Ward joined Preston in August 2004 as cover for Andy Lonergan.  He soon got a chance as Lonergan broke his hand during the 2-1 home win over QPR on 19 October to make his debut. Ward then made his full debut four days later in a 3-2 home win over Nottingham Forest. He made 4 full appearances before losing his place to Gould after a 4-2 home defeat to Leeds. After a further game in a 2-0 defeat at Burnley he returned to the side in a televised match against Ipswich but suffered an eye injury late in the game as Chris Neal took over the gloves in a 1-1 draw. This was his last appearance for the Lilywhites as he spent the remainder of this time on the bench before joining Tranmere for the 2006/07 season.

He didn’t start as first choice keeper but injury to John Achterberg meant he became the regular keeper two weeks into the season.

On 2 September 2006 he scored his only league goal via an 80 yard free kick in the 9th minute against Leyton Orient and earned him the Club’s ‘Goal of the Year’ award. He made 38 appearances for Tranmere after being released after being sent off in his final match against Crewe in May 2007.

Ward joined Chester for the 2007/08 seasons as reserve and coach to John Danby. He didn’t make a league appearance but came on as a half time substitute against Crewe in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy, which Chester won on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

Ward joined Wrexham in January 2008, but saw Wrexham lose their football league place at the end of the season. Ward made 54 appearances for the club before being released at the end of 2008/09.

Ward joined Zamaretto League side Hendersford before joining Brian Little at Gainsborough in December 2009 as position of player / assistant manager.
