Player Profile - Tommy Miller

Thomas William "Tommy" Miller was born on 8 January 1979 in Shotton Colliery.

Miller started his career at Ipswich but was released as a 15 year old and was taken on by Hartlepool and made his debut on 4 October 1997 in a 3-1 defeat at Chester. He made 13 appearances in the 1997/98 season scoring his only goal in a 3-3 draw against Cambridge on his eighth appearance.

His first brace came in the Auto Windowscreens Shields match against Preston on 19 January 1999. Since this match Miller has scored a further five goals against Preston.

Miller scored 14 goals in 44 appearances during the 1999/2000 season including a hat-trick in a 3-0 victory against Barnet on 2 November 1999. Hartlepool finished seventh but was beaten in the Play Off Semi Final against Darlington.

Miller was an ever present in 2000/01 season scoring 16 league goals including a brace in a 2-0 win at home to Exeter on 6 January 2001. Hartlepool finished in fourth position but again were beaten in the Play Off Semi final, this time by the eventual winners Blackpool. The Play Off match was his last game for Hartlepool after scoring 35 goals in 137 appearances

He was signed back to Ipswich on 16 July 2001 by manager George Burley for £750,000 and made his debut in a UEFA Cup tie away at Torpedo Moscow which Ipswich won 2-1 on 27 September. He made 8 league appearances during the season as Ipswich were relegated to the Championship.

Miller scored 6 goals in 30 appearances in 2001/02 and the following season made 34 appearances. His 11 goals included a brace in a 4-1 win over Millwall on New Years Day and a 4-3 defeat at Nottingham Forest on 5 April 2003. He also scored a brace in an 8-1 UEFA Cup victory over Avenir Bessin. Ipswich finished fifth but lost the Play Off semi Final against West Ham.

Miller only missed one game in the 2004/05 season and netted 13 goals including a brace in a 6-4 win over Crewe on 17 January. He made his 100th league appearance for the club also in January 2005 in a 1-1 draw at Reading. Ipswich finished third but for the second season running lost the Play Off Semi Final against West Ham, Miller's fourth unsuccessful Play Off attempt.

After making 117 appearances for Ipswich, scoring 30 goals, Miller joined Premier League side Sunderland on 23 June 2005 on a two-year contract. His debut came in a 3-1 home defeat against Charlton on 13 August 2005. His fist Premier League goal came in a 2-0 victory at Middlesbrough on 25 September. His nest match, one week late,r saw Miller score again in a 1-1 draw at home to West Ham. Miller scored one further goal and made a total on 29 appearances as Sunderland returned to the Championship after just one season, finishing bottom with a then record low of 15 points.

Miller started the first three games of the 2006/07season under new manager Niall Quinn, but after the appointment of Roy Keane he found himself sidelined, and was loaned to Preston.

Miller made his Preston debut in a 1-1 draw at Deepdale against Coventry when he was later substituted for Lewis Neal. Miller made a total of 7 appearances for the Lilywhites; his only appearance which he played a full 90 minutes was against his parent club Sunderland. His final appearance came in a 2-1 defeat at home to Derby on New Years Day.

Miller returned to Sunderland and made one further appearance on 10 March 2007 in a 2-0 win at Barnsley.

After 33 appearances for Sunderland, Miller was released at the end of the 2006/07 season.

After being released, Miller was linked to Championship sides Stoke, Coventry and Sheffield Wednesday, League One sides Nottingham Forest and Leeds plus SPL side Hearts.

On 19 July 2007 Miller started his third spell with Ipswich, signing a two-year contract and scored 3 in the last 6 matches finishing his goal tally for the season on 6 from 37 matches

Miller has appeared regularly for Ipswich in the 2008/09 season and has now made over 200 appearances in all competitions for the club.

His first nationality is English however he is eligible to play for Scotland. After his good form in 2004/05 he was noticed by Scotland manager Berti Vogts and was named in a friendly squad to face Wales; however Miller missed out due to an ankle injury and has not been chosen since.
