Player Profile Allan Smart

Allan Andrew Colin Smart was born in Perth on 8 July 1974. Smart began his career with junior club Balbeggie and had spells with St Johnstone and Brechin City, but without appearing for either's first team. In 1993 he joined Highland League club Caledonian; the following year Smart made his Scottish League debut following the merger which created Caledonian Thistle.

Smart, after a short trial was signed by John Beck in September 1994 for a fee of £15,000. Smart made his English Football League debut in a 1-0 defeat at Chesterfield on 26 November. His first goal came in his next match as PNE drew at home 1-1 in the FA Cup against Walsall . His first league goal came on Boxing Day in a 3-0 win at Deepdale against Rochdale and then scored 3 goals in his next 5 matches. The 1994/95 saw Smart score 6 goals in 19 league appearances.

During the summer Preston had signed Saville and Wilkinson and he was limited to just 2 substitute appearances during the season the last of these was a 2-2 draw at home to Scunthorpe on 16 September 1995.

Smart joined Carlisle on loan in November 1995 making 4 appearances. In September 1996 Smart joined Northampton on loan making just one appearance in a 2-1 home defeat to Cambridge on 14 September.

Smart signed permanently with Carlisle in October 1996 in a deal which brought David Reeves to Preston and scored on his second debut in a 2-2 draw at Rochdale on 12 October. Three days later he scored again in a 2-1 defeat at Exeter . Smart scored 5 goals in his first 9 matches for Carlisle and later scored a brace in a 3-1 win at Cambridge. During the 1996/97 season he had scored 10 goals from 28 league appearances and finished top scorer for Carlisle and a victory in the AutoWindscreens Final at Wembley.

The 1997/98 season saw Smart score in his first two matches in a draw against Southend and a victory in the League Cup at Chester. After the next match against Watford he missed the next six months due to injury before retuning to his former club Preston with a 3-0 victory. He then scored in the next two matches at home to Burnley and Millwall.

His last game was in a 3-2 defeat at Luton on 2 May 1998, he had scored 16 goals in 44 appearances in his second spell for Carlisle . In June 1998 Smart joined Watford for £100,000.

He made his Watford debut in a 2-1 victory at Ports on 8 August and scored his first goal in his fourth league game in a 4-1 defeat at Sunderland. Smart scored a brace in a 4-1 win at Swindon on 19 September. Smart scored 7 goals in 35 league appearances during the 1998/99 season. The season ended on a high as Smart scored an 89 minute goal in a 2-0 win over Bolton in the Play Off final at Wembley on 31 May 1999. His goal celebrations mimicked the shot-putter from the Scott's Porridge Oats packed and was rewarded with a years supply of the cereal.

Smart scored in his second Premiership match scoring the only goal in a victory over Chelsea on 18 September but again he missed over 4 months of the season due to injury. He later returned to score three goals on three matches but it wasn't enough to help Watford avoid relegation.

Injuries again limited Smart to just 8 appearances in 2000/01. His last appearance for Watford was in a 2-1 defeat at Grimsby on 14 April 2001. In total Smart had made 57 league appearances for Watford scoring 12 goals.

The 2001/02 season saw Smart join Hibernian on loan and made his debut in a 4-1 home defeat to Celtic on 25 August 2001. He made 5 appearances for Hibs, scoring one goal on his third appearance in a 4-0 win at home to St. Johnstone.

In November Smart joined Stoke on loan, he made 2 substitute appearances the last of these he was sent-off in a 0-0 draw at home to Oldham.

After serving his ban Smart joined Oldham for a fee of £225,000 and made his debut on 1 December in a 3-1 defeat at Cardiff . His first goal came in the LDV Vans Trophy in a victory at Notts Co. He did score a brace in a 3-2 win at home to Brentford on 26 February. The appearance on 20 April 2002 in a 1-0 win at home to QPR turned out to be his last as his contract was cancelled following two breaches of the club's disciplinary code. He had made 21 league appearances, scoring 6 goals.

Smart returned to Scotland in June 2002 to join Dundee United. His debut was as a substitute in a 2-1 home defeat to Kilmarnock on 10 August. Only 2 of his 17 appearances for the club were in the starting XI. Smart was also sent-off twice during the season, the first was in the Dundee derby.

In August 2003 Smart joined Crewe and made 6 substitute appearances, the first of these was in a 1-1 draw at Millwall on 23 August.

The 2004/05 season saw Smart join MK Dons and made his debut on 7 August 2004 in a 1-1 draw at home to Barnsley . Smart scored on his third appearance in a 2-1 defeat at Swindon and in the next two matches. In total he scored 4 goals in 18 appearances.

The 2005/06 season saw Smart join Bury and make his debut on 6 August 2005 in a 2-1 defeat at Cheltenham . His only goal for Bury was in his next match three days later in a 2-1 home defeat to Leyton Orient. Smart later suffered back-to-back sendings off before making his last league appearance in a 2-0 home defeat to Northampton on 26 January 2006. He had made 13 appearances for the Shakers.

In June 2006 Smart joined Irish club Portadown before retuning to the North West in July 2007 to join Blue Square North side Burscough on loan. Smart also can be heard as a football pundit on BBC Radio Lancashire.
