Player profile – Tom Williams

Thomas Andrew "Tom" Williams was born in Carshalton, London on 8 July 1980 and is an English-born Cypriot international who has played for twelve different league clubs.

His professional career began with West Ham in April 2000 when he joined the club from Walton & Hersham for a fee of £40,000. He went on loan to Peterborough in March 2001, without having made his senior Hammers debut. His league debut was a 2-1 defeat at Swindon on 28 April 2001, and the move was made permanent during the summer. He stayed with the Posh for one season and scored his first goal in a 3-2 victory over Blackpool on 20 October 2001. In total he had made 45 appearances, scoring twice, before moving to Birmingham for a fee of £350,000.

His career stalled at St. Andrews, playing just four games for Birmingham. In August 2002 and August 2003 Williams had two loan periods at Queens Park Rangers, netting twice in 31 appearances.

He rejoined Peterborough in December 2003, initially on loan, later joining permanently and making a further 21 appearances with one goal

In May 2004 Williams went to Barnsley on a free transfer making 39 appearances in the 2004/05 season, before moving again on a free transfer to Gillingham in July 2005

Williams made 13 appearances for the Gills but signed for Swansea in January 2006 after the Gills suffered financial problems. He returned to the side in December 2006 after a hernia operation in November. He was released by the club on 7 May 2007, making 47 league appearances.

On 27 July 2007, he joined Wycombe on a two-year deal, he made his debut in a 1-0 home defeat to Accrington on 11 August 2007. But on 31 December 2007 after 10 appearances Williams joined Peterborough United for the third time. Hias last match was a 2-1 home defeat to Swindon on 10 November 2007 in the FA Cup First Round.

Williams initially joined Posh on an emergency loan to make him available for the match on New Year's Day, for which he was an unused substitute. The loan was converted to a two-year permanent deal two days later and made a further 40 appearances for the club.

On 9 November 2009, Williams rejoined Championship side Queens Park Rangers on a short term loan deal, with a possible view to sign permanently in the January transfer window. This did not happen and after 5 games he returned to Peterborough during January 2010.

On 15 February Williams joined former boss Darren Ferguson at Preston on loan for the rest of the season. He made his debut in a 5-3 defeat at Derby on 16 February 2010. His last match was a 4-1 defeat at Reading on 2 May 2010. After 10 matches Preston decided not to sign him on a permanent basis and he returned to Peterborough where he was released following his contract expiry.

After a pre-season trial, Williams joined Championship club Bristol City on a six-month contract on 5 August 2010 but just made one substitute appearance when Williams joined Colchester on a month’s loan on 30 September. This was later extended twice until 31 December. Williams had his contract terminated at Bristol City on 5 January 2011.

For the U’s he scored once in 7 appearances when on 14 February 2011 Williams joined league one side Walsall on a deal until the end of the season, netting once in 14 league appearances.

Internationally Williams qualifies for Cyprus through his mother, he has one international cap to date, which came in 2006.

He is married to former glamour model Nicola McLean and they have two sons.
