Player Profile – Benny Green

Benjamin Haigh Green was born in Barnsley on 23 February 1882. The inside forward started his career with his home town club with a 1-0 win at Doncaster on 7 December 1902. A week later he was part of the Barnsley team who lost 4-0 at Preston. He then scored on his next two appearances with 3-2 wins at Stockport on 15 March and at home a week later against Newton Heath. 

The 1902/03 season saw Green start with a brace in his first two appearances against Stockport and Blackpool. His first hat-trick came on 1 January 1903 with a 3-0 win at home to Burnley. After a further brace 10 days later against Blackpool, he scored a brace in a 3-0 home win over Preston on 7 March. His last Barnsley match was a 4-0 defeat at Manchester United on 10 October. He scored 18 goals in 45 league matches.

Green joined First Division Small Heath and made his debut with a 2-1 home win over Blackburn on 17 October 1903 and scored twice during the season.  After the name change to Birmingham Green netted 5 goals in one match with a 7-0 home win over Middlesbrough on Boxing Day 1905. Green scored the first goal at the club's new ground, St Andrew's, on 29 December 1906, three days after the official opening, for which he was rewarded with a piano. This was his last brace for Birmingham came in a 3-0 home win over Preston. In total Green scored 44 league goals in 185 matches.

For the 1909/10 season Green joined Burnley, his first season with the Clarets saw him net his best season in front of goal with 18 in 34 league appearances. His debut was a 2-2 draw at home to Stockport on 11 September 1909.  He had to wait for his tenth appearance with his first goal with a 3-1 win at home to Grimsby on 27 November. The following home match on 11 December he netted a brace with a 5-2 win over Leicester.  The nest match at home saw another five goals with Green netting a hat-trick with a 5-1 victory over Blackpool. Two further braces were scored in consecutive matches in April 1910 against Grimsby and Man.City.

The following season Green made 37 league appearances with 11 goals. Green scored a brace on four occasions, the last came in the FA Cup Third Round 5-0 win against non-league Coventry on 25 February. His final Burnley match was a 2-0 home win over Clapham Orient on 29 April 1911. In total Green scored 29 league goals in 71 games.

For the 1911/12 season Green joined Preston and scored on debut with a 1-0 win at The Wednesday on 2 September 1911. His first goal at Deepdale came in a 2-2 draw against Bradford City on 7 October.  His first brace for Preston came in a 4-1 home win over Aston Villa on 13 April. Green scored 10 goals from 36 matches but could not help PNE being relegated to Division Two.

The 1912/13 campaign saw Green net 13 goals from 30 matches as the Lilywhites won the Second Division title.His season started with a brace in a 2-a draw against former club Burnley.

Green’s final match for Preston was a 2-0 defeat at Sheffield United on 6 December 1913 he had scored 23 goals in 73 matches.

Green joined his final club Blackpool and made his debut on Boxing Day 1913 in a 1-0 defeat at Wolves.  He had to wait for the following season for his first goal. He scored 4 goals in 31 appearances; his final match was a 1-0 defeat for Blackpool at Deepdale on 30 January 1915.

Benny Green was killed in action in France in on 26 April 1917, where he was serving as a private with the King's Own (Royal Lancaster Regiment).
