Matthew Brunton was an inside forward who was born in Burnley on 20 April 1878.

He started in career in Burnley with Vale XI in 1897 and South Lancashire Regiment the following year.

Whilst playing military football he was spotted by the directors of Preston who purchased his dischsrged and in August 1899 Brunton joined near neighbours Preston. Brunton scored on debut in a 3-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest on 2 September 1899. He scored in his next match a week later in his home debut, netting the only goal against Glossop. Brunton made a further 6 appearances but didn’t get on the scoresheet. The final match for the Lilywhites was a 3-1 defeat at Manchester City on 11 November.

After a spell with non-league Accrington Stanley in 1900, Brunton joined Second Division Burnley in July 1901. His Claret debut was a 1-0 defeat at Lincoln on 7 September 1901. Two days later he netted his first goal with the club on his home debut with a brace in a 3-0 win over Stockport. Brunton scored 8 goals in 30 games for Burnley All his goals came in the first 14 matches, including a hat-trick in a 7-0 victory on 28 December. His final match was a 3-0 defeat at Doncaster on 26 April 1902.

Brunton returned in 1902 for his second spell with Accrington Stanley. In May 1904 he returned to the Second Division with Leicester making 5 league appearances. His debut was a 0-0 draw at Blackpool on 3 September 1904. His only League win came on his home debut with a 3-2 victory over Doncaster. Brunton did register a second win as Leicester Fosse beat Linby Church 10-1 in the FA Cup. His final match was a 3-0 home loss to Liverpool on 28 January 1905.

Bunton joined Nelson and a third spell with Accrington Stanley, before joining Second Division Oldham in May 1906. He made one league appearance for Oldham with a 1-0 defeat at Blackpool on New Year’s Day in 1908. His final match was in the FA Cup with a 6-1 defeat at First Division Everton.

Bunton then played for a number on non-league clubs in the next few years. He started with Southport Central and Great Harwood in 1908, Haslingden in 1909 before joining three clubs in 1910. These were Darwen, a fourth Accrington Stanley spell before finishing his career with Rossendale United.

During WWI Matthew Brunton was a sergeant in the 7th South Lancashire Regiment  7th South Lancashire Regiment and was wounded in action. Brunton wrote to Burnley’s secretary John Howarth that he had badly injured his leg. He passed away in 1962.
