Player profile – Jackie Knight
John ‘Jackie’ Knight was born in Bolton on 12 September 1922 and joined as a junior at Burnley in 1938, his brother George was already at Turf Moor.
Due to the Second Word War, Knight had to wait nine years for his league debut in 1-1 draw at home to Chesterfield on 5 April 1947. He made a further league appearance in 1947/48 season scoring once.
Knight got more first team opportunities in 1947/48 as he deputised for the injured Bill Morris, he netted 3 goals in 16 appearances.
Knight made a further 8 appearances with one goal in 1948/49 with his last appearance in a 3-1 defeat at Aston Villa on 6 November 1948. Knight took his total league appearances for the Clarets to 26 with 5 goals.
In December 1948 Knight joined Preston in exchange with Scottish International Andy McLaren. Knight scored on debut but PNE lost 5-3 at Bolton on 4 December. He scored 4 goals from 16 league appearances but couldn’t help PNE to avoid their first post-war relegation to Division Two.
Knight scored in the first match of the 1949/50 season in a 2-1 defeat at Swansea but then had to wait a further 15 matches to score his next goal and then scored two in a week. His last Lilywhite appearance came in a 1-0 home defeat to Luton on 21 January 1950.
Knight was still on the PNE books for their 1950/51 Championship season, but didn’t add to his league tally of 7 goals from 39 appearances.
In July 1951 Knight joined Chesterfield and scored 6 goals from 35 appearances, before moving to Exeter in August 1952. Knight stayed for two seasons with Exeter making 56 league appearances with 6 goals.
Knight then joined non-league Bath City and passed away in 1996.
