Player Profile John Mullin

 

John Michael Mullin was born in Bury on 11 August 1975. He came through the youth system with Burnley and joined the first team in 1993/94 as the Clarets gained promotion to Division One via the play-offs. His debut came as a substitute for John Francis in a 3-0 win at Brighton on 14 September 1993. He made 6 appearances during the season, scoring once in a 1-1 draw at Port Vale on 18 December.

 

The following season saw Burney relegated back to Division Two with Mullin scoring once in 12 appearances. On 12 August 1995 Mullin joined Sunderland for £40,000 deal rising to £210,000 on appearances.

 

Mullin made his Sunderland debut as a substitute in a 2-0 home win over Wolves on 26 August 1995. He made 10 appearances with one goal as the Black Cats won the First Division title.

 

The following season in the Premier League saw a further 10 appearances from Mullin with his only Premier League goal came in a 2-1 win over Manchester United on 8 March 1997. Mullin scored in the 76 minutes to give the Wearside club a 2-0 lead.

 

He struggled to break into the team and after 6 appearances in 1997/98 Mullin joined Preston on a month’s loan on 13 February 1998. His debut came in a 0-0 draw at Brentford the following day with his seventh and final appearance came in a 3-2 home win over York on 14 March. 

 

After returning to Sunderland he was back in Lancashire two weeks later joining Burnley on loan, his second debut for the club was a 2-1 win over Grimsby. His third appearance on loan saw him receive a red card as Burnley lost 2-1 at home to Blackpool.

 

He returned to Sunderland for the 1998/99 season but joined Burnley on a free transfer on 13 July 1999, after netting 4 goals from 35 appearances for Sunderland.

 

Mullin made 37 appearances for Burnley in the 1999/2000 season as the Clarets finished Division Two runners-up to Preston. He scored 5 goals, including a brace on two occasions with victories over Wrexham and Brentford.

 

For the 2000/01 and 2001/02 season he made 40 appearances but only started in 11 of them with 3 goals. His final appearance for Burnley came when he replaced Ian Moore in a 1-0 defeat to West Brom on 29 September 2001.

 

On 4 October 2001 Mullin join Rotherham for a fee of £150,000, he stayed for almost five years making 180 league appearances for the Millers. His 12 goals include just one brace which came in a 6-2 win at former club Burnley on 14 December 2002.

 

Mullin joined Tranmere on a free transfer on 27 June 2006 and netted 5 goals in 50 appearances. On 1 August 2008 Mullin joined Accrington also on a free transfer and made 32 appearances. His final league appearance came in a 1-1 draw at Cheltenham on 8 May 2010.
