Player Profile - Lee Cartwright

Lee Cartwright was born in Rawtenstall on 19 September 1972 was signed from school as a trainee in 1989 by PNE boss John McGrath. In his thirteen years at the club Cartwright became a North End legend making a total of 472 appearances for the club scoring 30 goals and became only the fourth player ever to reach 100 substitute appearances for one club.

It was however under McGrath's successor Les Chapman that he made his first team debut at the age of 18 in a 1-0 win at Shrewsbury on 2n March 1991. His first goal came in a 2-0 home victory over Birmingham a fortnight later.

The following season in 1991/92 he became a regular in the side towards the end of November making 33 appearances and picked up the club's player of the year award as reward for a string of consistently good displays.

The 1992/93 season saw Preston relegated to Division Three although Cartwrights displays were again impressive and interest from both Oldham and Blackpool nearly led to him moving on. He was however persuaded to stay by new manager John Beck and he remained with the Lilywhites for the next eleven years.

Cartwight made 39 league appearances in 1993/94 as PNE reached the play-offs and played in the final at Wembley but lost to Wycombe 4-2. Further appearances in the Play-offs were made in the following season.

The 1995/96 season saw Manager Gary Peters move Cartwright from centre midfield to wide right which led to more accurate crossing and more goals for strikers Saville and Wilkinson. Unfortunately he suffered a serious knee injury which required a cruciate ligament operation in the 2-1 victory at Scunthorpe on 24 February 1996. This ended his season earlier but his 26 appearances had earned him a Division Three Championship medal. He returned to the side eleven months later at York on 21 January 1997.

His first double for PNE came on 22 November 1997 in a 4-1 victory at Wigan but injuries were starting to take their toll. Cartwright made 30 appearances in 1999/2000 but as PNE won the Second Division title he required a cartilage operation closely followed by a knee operation. Cartwright did play in the Play Off Final defeat against Bolton at the Millennium Stadium in 2001.

He started the 2001/02 season with a testimonial match against Middlesbrough and made his 400th senior appearance during the season.

He made his 407th and last league appearance for Preston was as a substitute in a 1-0 win at Gillingham on 13 December 2003 although he was an unused substitute for a few games afterwards.

In January 2004 however Cartwight moved to Stockport on a free transfer. His debut was a 2-2 draw with Peterborough on 31 January, making a further 14 appearances during the season.

His time at Edgeley Park though was disrupted by injury missing almost 5 months in 2004/05 and after 18 months in which he played 34 league games scoring just once in a 3-2 defeat at Colchester on 10 August. His last appearance was a 3-0 defeat at Walsall on 17 May 2005.

Cartwright moved on to Rochdale for the start of the 2005/06 season. Again though injury ruined his season he made 27 games and one goal which came in a 3-0 home win over Notts County on 15 October. His last league game came in a 2-0 home win over Bristol Rovers on 19 April 2006 before being released.

Without a club for the first time in his career he was contemplating retirement until former PNE player Mark Patterson the new manager of Conference North side Scarborough offered him a contract for the 2006/07 season. He won the club's final ever Player of the Year award.

Following Scarborough relegation and subsequent liquidation, Cartwright signed for another Conference North side in Hyde. Their manager Steve Waywell called him the best player they had played against the previous season.

Cartwright had the opportunity to put on a Lilywhite shirt again for the first time in over 6 years when he was chosen to be in the PNE squad for the Masters tournament which was held in Liverpool in July.
