Player Profile - John Halls

John Halls was born in Islington on St.Valentine's Day in 1982. His career began in the youth set-up at Arsenal and was part the FA Youth winning team of 2000. However, the Halls found first-team football at Arsenal hard to come by, making only a few League Cup appearances for the club. The first of these League Cup appearances was as a substitute against Manchester United on 5 November 2001, a game in which Arsenal won 4-0 but after coming on in the 50th minute, Halls was dismissed for two bookable offences 22 minutes later.

Like many Arsenal juniors, he was frequently loaned out; firstly to League One side Colchester in January 2002. He made his League debut in a 2-1 home defeat to Chesterfield on 19 January and made a further five appearances but was not on the winning side once.

Halls spent the entire 2002/03 season playing for KSK Beveren in Belgium's Second Division along with fellow Arsenal youngsters Graham Stack, Steve Sidwell and a player currently with PNE, Liam Chilvers. These loans came about as part of an agreement between the two clubs which existed between 2001 and 2006.

In October 2003, Halls was loaned out again, this time to Stoke, making his debut in a 2-1 home win over Nottingham Forest on 4 October 2003. He made 8 appearances in two months and after impressing manager Tony Pulis, joined the Championship on a permanent basis in December 2003 for a fee of £100,000, making a further 25 league appearances during the season.

The 2004/05 season saw Halls make a further 22 League appearances and scored his first league goals in consecutive matches in the space of four days. The first was in a 4-2 defeat at Leicester on 9 August and then scored the only goal on the 13th at Millwall. His 61st and last appearance came in a 1-0 home defeat to Leeds on 28 December 2004.

Halls' contract was due to expire in the summer of 2006 but the player had expressed a desire to seek pastures new provoking a number of clubs to show an interest in capturing his signature. High-flying Reading paid an initial fee of 250,000 for Halls' services on 19 January 2006 beating fellow Championship sides Crystal Palace and Southampton who had both shown interest in signing Halls at the time.

Halls made his Royals debut in the FA Cup Fourth Round tie at home to Birmingham on 28 January 2006 which ended 1-1, he also played in the 2-1 replay defeat. His league debut finally came on 17 April 2006 against his former club, Stoke, he also scored in this game, helping Reading to a 3-1 victory.

Halls found his first team chances limited after Reading's promotion in 2006 and did not make a Premier League appearance in 2006/07 having to settle for two League Cup appearances against Darlington and Liverpool. His chances of breaking into the first team were hampered by an achilles injury which had plagued him throughout the season.

Halls' one and only Premier League appearance came in a 3-0 defeat at Bolton on 25 August 2007. This was followed by two more League Cup run-out's and scored in the 4-2 home defeat to Liverpool on 25 September. His time was spent playing in the reserves and scored in the 2-0 win against Charlton reserves which help Reading win the Premier Reserve League South title. He also played in the team which defeated Bolton Reserves 2-0 in the North v South Premiership Reserve Play-Off Final.

As first team opportunities again proved scarce at the Madejski Stadium he was loaned out on three separate occasions to Championship sides during the 2007/08 season.

His first port of call was Preston in November 2007 and made his debut in a 1-0 defeat at Barnsley on 3 November. The 3-0 defeat at Hull on his second appearance led to the sacking of manager Paul Simpson. His only appearance at Deepdale was the 2-0 defeat against Charlton and the last of his four appearances on 27 November also ended in defeat, this time at Crystal Palace with the Eagles winning 2-1.

It was the Eagles who he joined next on 9 January 2008 in a 3-0 victory at Wolves on 12 January. A week later he made his home debut in a 2-0 win verses Bristol City. He made three further appearances, but was not on the winning side, his fifth and last appearance on his month's loan came in a 2-0 defeat to Charlton on 8 February.

On 14 March 2008 Hall joined Sheffield United for the remainder of the season and made six appearances making his debut in a 1-0 win at Barnsley.

Despite Reading's relegation into the Championship, Halls was released by the club on 16 May 2008. During his two and a half year stay at Reading he made just two first-team league appearances.

On 19 July, Halls featured in a pre-season match for Blackpool, with who he was on trial with. The match was against Wrexham and finished goalless.

On 26 August, he joined Sheffield Wednesday on trial and played in a friendly against Shrewsbury but was released after the match.

Halls joined League Two side Brentford on a one-year deal on 25 September 2008 and made his debut in a1-0 win at Chesterfield four days later. He featured 23 times for the club before being released at the end of the season.

The summer of 2009 saw Halls joined Aldershot as a trialist, before on 28 July 2009 announcing that Halls had signed a two year contract. Halls was allocated the number 11 shirt for the 2009/10 season and on the 6 August manager Gary Waddock announced that he would be the vice-captain for the season. He made his debut on 8 August 2009 in a 3-1 home victory over Darlington.
