Player profile – Craig Beattie

Craig Beattie was born in Glasgow on 16 January 1984 and started his career as a schoolboy with Rangers. It was the team he supported in his youth but, after being released by manager Dick Advocaat he joined Celtic.

Beattie was a prolific goalscorer throughout his  pre first team Celtic career. During an under-19 pre-season friendly against Irish side Derry City, Beattie scored all six goals in a 6–0 win.

In August 2003 he made his senior debut for the Hoops as substitute in a UEFA Champion League qualifying victory against FBK Kaunas. Beattie later featured in UEFA Cup tie against Barcelona.

After scoring four goals near the end of the 2004/05 season, he started the 2005/06 season by becoming the first Scot since Gerry Creaney to score in three consecutive games for Celtic. He netted seven goals in the first three months of the season but an injury suffered against Dundee United forced him out for the remainder of the season.

Due to long-term injury, particularly to the hamstring, the majority of Beattie's appearances were from the bench. He appeared as substitute in 43 games and had just 23 starts which limited his Celtic career goal tally to just 16. His last Celtic goal came against Aberdeen on 17 February 2007 in a 2–1 win. His last game for the Hoops was a 1-0 Scottish Cup Final victory over Dunfermline on 26 May 2007.

Beattie was signed on a three-year contract by West Brom on 3 July 2007 for an initial fee of £1.25 million with an added £500,000 depending on performance-related add-ons. He scored his first hat-trick for the team on 4 August in a friendly against Dutch side SC Heerenveen. Beattie made his competitive Albion debut in a 2–1 defeat away at Burnley on 11 August, which was the opening day of the 2007/08 season. Three days later he scored his first competitive goal for the club, as Albion beat Bournemouth 1-0 in the League Cup.

Beattie moved on loan to Preston on 4 March 2008 until the end of the season. He made his Preston debut later that day in a 1–0 win away at Leicester, but was substituted after 38 minutes due to a muscle injury, later revealed to be a double hamstring tear. Beattie returned to West Brom early in order to receive treatment for the injury and was expected to miss the rest of the season. But he made a rapid recovery and returned to Preston for the final two games of the loan spell. He made one further appearance as a substitute for the Lilywhites in a 3-0 defeat at Bristol City on 4 May 2008.

In September 2008, Beattie joined Crystal Palace on a month-long loan; he made his debut in a 1-1 draw at Ipswich and scored three days later on his second appearance to give them a 1-0 victory over Charlton in the South London derby. Beattie scored further goals for the Eagles against Blackpool, Bristol City and Norwich. Although the loan was later extended until 28 December 2008, Beattie was recalled on 10 December due to an injury to Ishmael Miller. If final game for the Eagles was played two days earlier, scoring in a 3-0 home victory over Southampton to take his goal tally to 5 from 15 appearances.

On return to West Brom Beattie scored his first Premier League goal on 28 December, in a 2-0 home win against Tottenham.

Beattie joined Sheffield United on a three-month loan in February 2009, making his debut a day later, appearing as a second half substitute in a 2–2 draw at Plymouth. Beattie went on to make 13 league appearances for United that season, all but one of them from the bench. He scored one goal in the process, netting the fourth in a 4–2 home win over Derby on 14 March. He played in both of the Play Off Semi Final matches against a former club in Preston and in the Final at Wembley, but the 1-0 defeat to Burnley on 25 May 2009 led to him being subsequently returned to his parent club.

In his last game for West Brom he scored a brace in a 4-3 League Cup victory over Rotherham on 26 August He had scored 4 league goals from 31 appearances but had only started in seven of them.

Following the transfer of Jason Scotland from Swansea to Wigan, Beattie signed for the Swans on 27 August 2009. His debut was a 1-1 draw against Watford two days later and scored his first goal on 17 October 2009 against Ipswich. He also scored in his next game for Swansea against previous club West Brom on 20 October. Up to the end of the 2009/10 season Beattie had netted 3 goals from 23 appearances for Swansea.

Beattie made his Scotland international debut as a 75th minute substitute in a draw against Italy in September 2005. He scored his first goal for his country in a 2–1 victory against Georgia on 24 March 2007 and has so far gained seven caps.
