Player Profile STUART HICKS

Stuart Jason Hicks was born in Peterborough on 30 May 1967. Hicks was an apprentice with his home tome club and signed professional forms in August 1984.

He was unable to break into the first team and left Peterborough without making a league appearance to join non-league Wisbech Town .

In March 1988 Hicks joined Colchester and made 64 appearances in two and a half years. Hicks left the Layer Road club in August 1990 after they had lost their football league status to join Scunthorpe.

Hicks remained at Scunthorpe for two years making 67 appearances and scoring one goal. In the 1991/92 season Hicks helped Scunthorpe to promotion to the third division via the play offs, although he missed the final at Wembley due to injury. Heartache was to follow again 3 years later.

Hicks joined Doncaster in August 1992 making 36 appearances in the 1992/93 season before joining Huddersfield in August 1993. Hick made 36 appearances scoring one goal for Huddersfield in the seven months he was with them.

In March 1994 Hicks was signed by John Beck, making his debut on 2 April 1994 in a 3-2 defeat at Chester. A further three league appearances was made during the 1993/94 but did not end up on the winning side, although Preston did reach the Division Three play offs.

Hicks did not play in the first leg 2-0 defeat at Torquay as Trevor Matthewson partnered David Moyes in the centre of defence. He did play in the second leg which was to be the final match for PNE on the plastic pitch, scoring his only goal for Preston seven minutes after half time with a header to make it 3-1 on the night and 3-3 on aggregate to take the tie into extra time. A goal by Paul Raynor in the 116 minute helped PNE reach Wembley for the first time in 30 years.

Hick was to miss out on a Wembley appearance for the second time as Beck told Hicks at 1.30 on the day that he was dropped and replaced by Jamie Squires. Preston lost 4-2 against Wycombe with Jamie Squires scoring and own goal 30 seconds after Ian Bryson had given PNE the lead with an overhead kick.

Hicks started the 1994/95 season partnering David Moyes again but only made 8 further appearances, he made his twelfth and his final appearance for the Whites on 22 October 1994 in a 3-1 defeat at Colchester. Hicks moved to Scarborough in February 1995. Although Scarborough struggled in the third division finishing 23 in 1994/95 and 1995/96, he was a great servant for the club, winning the Scarborough player of the year in 1996. After 85 appearances and two goals Hicks joined Leyton Orient in August 1997.

The 1998/99 season saw Leyton Orient finish sixth. Hicks missed the first leg goalless draw play-off match against Rotherham due to suspension. But a 4-2 penalty shoot-out victory led to Hicks finally playing in a Wembley play-off final at the third attempt. Unfortunately it led to disappointment as a sixth minute header from Alex Calvo-Garcia gave Scunthorpe a 1-0 win.

After 78 appearances and one goal Hicks joined Chester in February 2000 and made 13 appearances for Chester in the remainder of the season as Chester were relegated to the Conference.

After rejecting Carlisle, Hicks joined Mansfield in July 2000, but suffered a right cruciate knee ligament injury. In February 2002 after a year out Hicks made an appearance in the reserves. But a week later a specialist told the 34 year old to call it a day as his knee was not up to the demands of professional football. Hicks had made 25 appearances for the Stags.

Hicks did return to football with non-league Hucknall Town.
