Player Profile SEAN GREGAN

Sean Matthew Gregan was born in Guisborough on 29 March 1974 and began his career with Darlington, signing professional forms in January 1991 after being part of their youth scheme.

In his first season in 1990/91 Darlington won the old Fourth Division Championship making 17 appearances. The following season Gregan made a further 17 appearances scoring his first league goal, unfortunately Darlington returned to be fourth tier after finishing bottom of Division Three, losing 29 matches in the process.

Gregan became an inspiration figure at the heart of the Quakers defence and became their longest serving player at the age of 22.

Darlington came close to promotion again in 1995/96 as although Gregan had a great game in the Third Division Play-Off Final at Wembley, Darlington lost to Plymouth.

On 23 November 1996 Gregan played his final game for Darlington in a 3-2 defeat away at Scunthorpe. In just under 6 years Gregan had made 136 appearances for the Quakers scoring 4 goals.

Gregan signed for Gary Peters' Preston for £350,000, making his debut in a SKY televised match on 13 December 1996 as PNE beat Blackpool 3-0. His first goal for PNE was a 30-yard thunderbolt at Shrewsbury in a 2-0 victory for PNE on 26 April 1996. During his first season for PNE Gregan had made 21 appearances as they finished fifteenth in the Second Division.

The following season PNE finished fifteenth again as Gregan made 35 appearances scoring 2 goals. These goals came in consecutive matches away at Grimsby and home to Gillingham , both matches ended in 3-1 defeats. Gregan was named captain midway through the season.

The 1998/99 season saw Gregan only miss 5 matches as PNE reached the Play Off Semi Finals and was chosen for the PFA Second Division Team.

The1999/2000 saw PNE win the Second Division Championship with Gregan lifting the trophy on 29 April 2000 in their last home match of the season against Millwall, although Gregan missed the last 6 matches of the season due to cracking a bone in his back, away at Wigan. Gregan was again selected for the PFA side with his battling qualities and distribution skills Gregan moved into midfield and was voted as PNE Player of the Year.

Gregan made 41 appearances for Preston in the First Division in 2000/01 having missed 6 weeks of the campaign following a cartridge operation, scoring 2 goals in the season his first a 50 yard lob from the half way line at Norwich in March 2001. Gregan took and scored the third penalty in the penalty shoot out in against Birmingham in the Play-Off Semi-Final and led his team out for the first time at the Millennium Stadium against Bolton . Sadly PNE lost and Gregan slumped crestfallen at the end of the match.

Gregan made his 200th league appearance for the Lilywhites in February 2002. His final appearance for Preston after 212 league appearances and 12 goals was a 2-1 victory over Nottingham Forest .

After West Brom had finished runners up to Manchester City to earn promotion to the Premiership for the 2002/03 season, Baggies boss Gary Megson launched a bid for Gregan. A war of words began as PNE claimed the original offer was derisory. But in the end a £1.5 million fee was agreed which could increase to £2 million and Gregan signed a four year contract in early August 2002.

His first game in the Premiership was a 1-0 defeat against Manchester United at Old Trafford. Gregan's first goal for West Brom was against Southampton on 14 September 1992 with a 25 yard shot in the 80th minute to beat Southampton keeper Paul Jones winning the stand-in skipper the man of the match award. This was the Baggies third victory on the trot. This was his only goal in the Premiership and West Brom early promise evaporated and was relegated at the end of the season.

Gregan led West Brom to the return to the Premiership at the end of the 2003/04 season as they finished runners up to Norwich. His last game for West Brom was a 2-0 home defeat to Nottingham Forest on 9 May 2004. He made 79 appearances scoring 2 goals.

In August 2004 Gregan put in a transfer request as he didn't think he
would get adequate first-team opportunities. After interest by Cardiff and Nottingham Forest a bid by Kevin Blackwell of £500,000 which could rise to £1 million in a three year deal was accepted by the West Brom board and Gregan made his debut for Leeds on 18 September 2004 in a 2-2 draw at Crewe.

Although at one point his stay looked like it was going to be a short one after his family was verbally abused after a 2-0 home defeat against Leicester, Gregan considered leaving but following the backing of many Leeds supporters Gregan remained at the club and finished fourteenth in the Championship making 35 appearances.

The 2005/06 season saw Leeds reached the Play Off Final after beating Preston at Deepdale in the Semi Final but again Gregan was disappointed with another 3-0
Millennium Stadium defeat this time against Watford.

England Under 21 squad player Matthew Kilgallon as kept Gregan out of the side, and now under his third manager this season Gregan has been limited to only one league appearance in 2006/07.
