Player Profile – Sean Haslegrave

Sean Matthew Haslegrave was born in Stoke-on-Trent on 7 June 1951. Haslegrave had a trial with his local side Stoke but was rejected due to his small stature. On leaving school he served an apprenticeship as a welder and played football for local amateur sides

But in late November 1968 he signed professional terms with Stoke and made his first team debut in 1970 making 15 appearances during the season. Haslegrave was limited to just 18 appearances in 1971/72 and missed Stoke’s 2-1 win over Chelsea in the 1972 League Cup Final at Wembley due to a knee injury.

His best season in front of goal was in 1972/73 when he scored twice from just 6 appearances. He made the most appearances in one season for Stoke in his final season for the club in 1975/76 with 28 league appearances. In total he had scored 5 goals from 113 appearances, all in the First Division.

In July 1976 Haslegrave signed for Second Division Nottingham Forest for a fee of £50,000 as new Forest manager Brian Clough’s's first signing. He made his debut in a 0-0 draw against local rivals Notts County in the Anglo Scottish Cup on 7 August 1976. His first league game was two weeks later in a 2-2 draw against Fulham. Injuries to both ankles kept him out of the side and he struggled to get back into the first team as he only made 7 appearances during the season. His only league goal for Forest came in a 3-0 home win against Blackburn on 6 November. His last game came in a 2-1 home defeat against Luton on 12 February 1977.

When Forest signed ex North-Ender Archie Gemmill in September 1977, Haslegrave was further down the pecking order. On 29 September 1977, Haslegrave left to join Preston who was managed by Nobby Stiles for a fee of £25,000.

His first game for PNE was in the 2-0 win at home to Cambridge on 1 October and remained in the number eight shirt for the rest of the season. He made a total of 38 league appearances as Preston gained promoted to Division Two.

The 1978/79 season saw Haselgrave only miss one league game and scored his first goal for the club in a 3-2 home defeat to Crystal Palace on 14 October. He was limited to just 25 appearances in 1979/80 and injuries in 1980/81 saw him have to wait until March 1981 to make the starting eleven. He only made 9 appearances for the season, but scored in the 3-1 win at Cardiff on 11 April. His last game for the club was on the final day of the season on 6 May 1981. Although Preston won 2-1 at Derby other results went against them and they were relegated to Division Three. Stiles were sacked soon afterwards and Haslegrave was released, he had scored twice from 113 league appearances at Preston.

Haslegrave signed for Crewe in August 1981 and was a regular in the side scoring once from 40 appearances in 1981/82 and 42 appearances in 1982/83. After two seasons with a struggling Crewe side that had to seek re-election on both occasions he moved to York in July 1983, where his former Stoke teammate Dennis Smith was manager.

In his first season for York he scored twice from 24 appearances and helped York to promotion to the Third Division, with a record points haul. He made his 100th league appearance for the club in 1985/86 and made a total of 142 league appearances for York, although he never scored a League goal for them in four seasons.

In August 1987, Haslegrave joined a Torquay side that had just avoided relegation out of the league in the last few minutes of the previous season. However, under new manager Cyril Knowles the side was transformed and reached the Fourth Division play-offs and the Sherpa Wan Trophy final at Wembley. Haslegrave began coaching at Torquay and by the time he left in 1989 had become Knowles' assistant. He was described in an autobiography by former England player Lee Sharpe, who had joined Torquay as an apprentice during Haslegrave's first season at the club, as the 'ultimate midfield terrier'. Haselgrave had scored once in 36 appearances for Torquay.

On retiring he returned to Preston to coach the youth team and became Director of the club's Centre of Excellence. On leaving North End he became Head Coach at Cardinal Newman College and subsequently was also invited to coach the English Colleges side, he also holds a UEFA (A) coaching badge.
