Player Profile BRETT ANGELL

Brett Ashley Mark Angell was born in Marlborough on 20 August 1968. Angel was a well travelled striker playing for 15 clubs during his career and scoring 224 goals in 577 appearances in all competitions.

Angell started his career with Portsmouth but failed to land a contract at the end of his traineeship. Angell dropped into non-league football at Cheltenham Town to kick start his career. He was spotted by Cheltenham playing 6-a-side soccer and under the guidance of the Robins boss Don Murphy he was determined to make the most of his opportunity.

By February 1988 he had scored 24 goals from 37 appearances prompting Derby manager Arthur Cox to pay £45,000 to take him to the old Baseball Ground.

His chances were limited and eight months later without making a league appearance Asa Hartford the Stockport Manager broke the (then) County transfer record by paying Derby £33,000 on 20 October 1988.

He made his Stockport debut in a 1-1 draw at Scarborough and scored his first goal a week later in a 3-0 home win against Hartlepool. His appearances were limited at first due to County have John Cooke, Tony Caldwell, Bob Colville and Tony Hancock (who later signed for PNE for £50,000,but due to injuries never made a league appearance). In 1988/89 Angel had scored 5 goals from 27 appearances.

When Danny Bergara replaced Hartford in March 1989 Bergara quickly sold fans favourite Colville and Hancock but saw potential in Angell. Five games into the 1989/90 season saw Angell score four times in a 6-0 win against Hartlepool, the first time since Freddie Goodwin against Orient over two decades earlier that a County player scored four goals.

His 23 goals from 43 starts help County to their best season for over 20 years but missed out on promotion by one point. Angell won the Golden Boot for being the top scorer in the fourth division but rocked the club with a transfer request.

Angell agreed to join Southend in August 1990 who had just pipped Stockport for a promotion place although there was a disagreement over the fee Stockport wanted £250,000 whilst Southend offered £15,000. The league tribunal set the fee at £100,000 with Stockport having to pay £19,500 as a sell-on clause to Derby .

Angell saw promotion again as Southend finished runners-up to Cambridge to win a place in the (old) Second Division for the first time in their history. Angell also scored twice in the memorable 4-0 win over Newcastle United, which took Southend to the top of the old second division for two hours in 1992. Despite lengthy periods of injuries he continued to score goals and there was speculation of a move to the top filght Angel scored 47 goals in 115 league appearances for Southend.

Angell signed for Everton in January 1994 for £500,000 after initially going on loan, although Stockport were unhappy with the tribunal verdict when he signed for Southend in1990 they were happy this time as their sell-on clause netted Stockport £160,000.

Angell made his debut for Everton, on loan, coming on as sub on 25 September 1993 in a 5-1 home defeat against Norwich. His only goal for Everton came in the next home match scoring from 2 yards in a 4-2 victory against Chelsea. His full debut came on 15 January 1994 in a 6-2 home victory against Swindon.

But after just 20 appearances he was transferred to Peter Reid's Sunderland for £600, 000 in March 1995. But Angell struggled to force his way into the Premiership team and had to be content with reserve football. Following the summer signings of Niall Quinn and Paul Stewart saw Angell further down the list.

Angel scored his only goal for Sunderland in the Coca Cola Cup against Preston and went on loan to Sheffield United in January 1996 scoring 2 goals in 6 games and a further 3 substitute appearances for West Brom on loan in March 1996.

His time on Wearside was the low point in his career and made only 10 league appearances. He had become so out of favour he was training with the youth team. David Jones signed him for Stockport initially on loan in August 1996 before agreeing a fee of £120,000 in November 1996 after Sunderland had demanded £200,000.

Stockport season in 1996/97 was one for the record books as they reached the FA Cup Fourth Round; Autoglass Trophy Northern Finalist, Coca Cup Semi Finalist anf promotion to the second tier for the first time in 60 years. Promotion was secured in a 1-0 win at Chesterfield scored by Brett Angell.

In his four full seasons at Stockport he was top scorer on each occasion and in his two spells at Edgeley Park scored 95 goals in 235 appearances putting him fourth in Stockport's all-time goal scoring list.

In his final season at Stockport in 1999/2000 he went on loan to Notts County in December 1999 scoring 5 goals from 6 appearances including an hat-trick in a 5-1 victory against Bournemouth .

David Moyes signed him on loan for Preston in February 2000 for the remainder of the season. He made his PNE as a substitute in a 2-0 home defeat against Gillingham . Angell's first goals was to score both goals as a substitute in a 3-2 home defeat against Colchester . The following match he made his full debut scoring the only goal in a 1-0 win at Bournemouth and scoring a brace in his next match in a 3-1 home victory against Oxford , taking his tally to 5 goals in 3 matches in a week. His 8 goals in 15 appearances were crucial as Preston won the Division Two title. Angell also scored in his final two appearances for PNE in the 3-2 victory at home to Millwall as they were crowned champions and in a 2-0 victory on 6 May 2000 at Bristol City and was rewarded with a winners medal.

Angell signed for Walsall in July 2000 and helped Walsall to promotion to Division One via a play-off victory against Reading with Angell as a substitute in 2001. Angel opened his account for Walsall scoring two second half goals against Rotherham on 12 August Also that season Angell scored a 18 minute second half hat-trick against Northampton on 5 May 2001.

After 16 goals in 61 league appearances Angell signed for Rushden & Diamonds in February 2002 scoring 2 goals from 5 league appearances and helping them reach the play offs..

In his final season in league football in 2002/03 Angell signed for Port Vale in August 2002 scoring 5 goals from 15 appearances before transferring to Queens Park Rangers in November 2002. His debut for QPR was a 0-0 draw at Luton on 23 November 2002. He made his 13 and final league appearance coming on as sub in a 4-1 victory against Cheltenham on 18 March 2003. Angell did not manage to score a league goal for QPR.

A proposed moved to Irish club Linfield fell through. In October 1995 he became youth and reserve team coach with his boyhood club Portsmouth only to lose his job less than six months later in April 1996.

Angell is now a consultant helping other professional footballers get the best deal they can.
