Player Profile Rob Edwards

Robert William Edwards was born in Kendal on 1 July 1973. Edwards started his career as a trainee with Carlisle and signed professional forms in April 1990.

Edwards made 48 league appearances, scoring 5 goals for Carlisle before transferring on 27 March 1991 to Division Two side Bristol City for a fee of £135,000.

Initially Edwards struggled to get into the side and in 1994/95 as Bristol City finished twenty third and was relegated to the third tier. The following season Edwards struggled with glandular fever but returned in the 1996/97 season to make 31 appearances as Bristol City finished fifth. Edwards played in the play- off first leg home defeat against Brentford.

The 1997/98 season saw Bristol City promoted as runners-up in League Two. Edwards made 37 appearances and scored 2 goals the last of these was the equalizer in a 1-1 draw at home to Watford on 13 April 1998.

The season in the Championship was a disappointment for the Ashton Gate side as they were relegated back to the third tier. Due to niggling injuries Edwards was limited to appear in only half of the season's matches. In over 8 years Edwards had made 218 appearances for Bristol City, scoring 5 goals, most of these was in midfield.

After turning down a new contract, Edwards joined Preston on 4 August 1999. Edwards made his debut three days later as a substitute for left-back Dominic Ludden in a 1-0 win at Oldham. His full debut was at home against Wrexham in the Worthington Cup on 10 August.

Edwards made 41 appearances mainly as left back as Preston won the Division Two title. He scored 3 goals. The first was a 4-1 victory in the Auto Windowscreens match at home to Wrexham in December. His two league goals came in comprehensive 4-0 and 3-0 wins at Cardiff and Burnley respectively.

The 2000/01 season saw Edwards make 42 league appearances and play in the Championship play-off final defeat against Bolton . Injuries made him miss an international appearance for Wales but still made 36 appearances for PNE in 2001/02.

The next two seasons under Craig Brown, Edwards made 50 appearances as he was used in a three man central defense. His last appearance for Preston was on 12 April 2004 in a 2-2 draw at home to Nottingham Forest . He was released at the end of the season and in total had made 169 league appearances scoring 4 goals for PNE.

On 1 July 2004 Edwards joined Blackpool and made his debut in a 2-0 defeat at Doncaster on 7 August. His only goal for the club was on his second appearance on his home debut as Blackpool lost 2-1 against Sheffield Wednesday. In two seasons Edwards made 58 league appearances for Blackpool before being released.

In July 2006, Edwards joined Conference side Exeter and made 42 league appearances during the 2006/07 season scoring his only goal in a 2-2 draw at Gravesend and Northfleet in October 2006. After playing in the semi final play off victory against Oxford , his Wembley appearance ended in disappointment as Exeter lost the play-off final 2-1 to Morecambe.

Edwards made four appearances for Wales whilst with Bristol City , 2 Wales 'B' caps and received 17 caps at the Under 21 level.
