Player Profile DAVID LUCAS


David Anthony Lucas was born in Preston on 23 November 1977. Lucas was a trainee at Preston and sign professional forms for his home town club in December 1994. During his first season Lucas was an unused sub on numerous occasions to first choice keepers Barry Richardson and John Vaughan.


The 1995/96 season saw Vaughan and Richardson share the keepers shirt with Gary Peters allowing Lucas to gain some first team experience in December 1995 by going on loan to Darlington. In his first spell with the Quakers Lucas made 6 appearances. Lucas made his PNE debut in the penultimate game of the season at Hartlepool on 27 April 1996. Lucas kept a clean sheet in a 2-0 victory which gave Preston the Third Division title.


Following an early appearance in the League Cup victory against Wigan, Lucas returned to Darlington for a further month in October 1996 making 7 appearances, the final match on 2 November was a 1-1 draw against Scarborough . A loan at Scunthorpe was arranged just before Christmas and made his Irons debut in a 3-2 home defeat against Wigan on 28 December. His final match and sixth appearance for Scunthorpe was a 2-0 defeat at Darlington on 15 February 1997.


Lucas played in the final two matches for Preston in the 1996/97 season at Shrewsbury and at home to Walsall both finishing in 2-0 wins for PNE.


The summer of 1997 saw Lucas join the England Under 20 squad in Malaysia. Lucas was selected in the Nationwide representative squad against an Italian Serie B side. Also Lucas was in the England Under 21 squad against Switzerland and in the England B squad against Portugal.


The 1997/98 season saw Lucas make 6 appearances for Preston, but didn't finish on the winning side once as Tepi Moilanen made the other 40 appearances for Preston.


The following season saw Lucas replace the injured Moilanen in the 4-1 victory against Burnley on 7 November 1998 and kept the keepers jersey for the remainder of the season as PNE lost in the Play-Off Semi Final.


Lucas stated the 1999/2000 season as first choice keeper but a controversial sending off in the 4-1 home defeat against Wigan on 28 August led to Lucas remaining on the bench for the rest of the season as Moilanen kept 23 clean sheets in 40 appearances as Preston won the Second Division title.


Lucas replaced Moilanen in September 2000 and made 29 league appearances. Lucas appeared in the three Play Off matches when he saved the first penalty from Marcello in Semi Final against Birmingham as it went to a penalty shoot out and in the defeat against Bolton at the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff in the Final.


The 2001/02 season saw Lucas share goalkeeping duties again with Moilanen as they each made 23 appearances plus a substitute appearance.

Lucas made his first league appearance of the 2002/03 season on 28 October 2002 in a 1-0 home win against Reading which was also his 100 league appearance for the club.

Lucas only missed one match in the next thirteen games before an injury on at Stoke in New Years Day gave Jonathan Gould the keepers jersey, Gould remained in goal for two months before an injury allowed Lucas to retain the number one position on March 18 in a 5-0 victory against Reading . His final game of the season was a 5-1 defeat at Reading on 15 April 2003 when he received his second red card for the club after bring down Glen Little in the 57 minute.


The 2003/04 season saw Lucas as third choice as Craig Brown had Gould and Andy Lonegan. Lucas only made only two appearances for PNE during the season, the first as sub for Gould in the 1-0 defeat against West Brom and his 122 and final appearance for the club in a 2-1 defeat at Bradford on 13 September 2003.


Lucas joined Second Division Sheffield Wednesday on a month's loan, making his debut in a 2-1 home victory against Notts County. A 3-0 victory at Brentford three days later was his only other win in his first spell for Wednesday. His seventh and final game was a 1-0 defeat at home to Blackpool on 1 November 2003.


Lucas when on a further two month loan to the Owls on 12 December 2003 and making a further 10 appearances winning two, drawing six and losing two. The first of these was a 1-1 draw at Barnsley and his final appearances was a 3-0 defeat at Port Vale on 7 February 2004 when he suffered medial ligament damage to rule him out for the reminder of the season.


On 1 June 2004 Lucas joined Sheffield Wednesday for a fee of £100,000 making 34 appearances in 2004/05 Season. The first game in his latest spell was a 3-0 home defeat against Colchester. After two further defeats at Blackpool and Torquay Lucus kept a clean sheet in a 1-0 win against Huddersfield. Lucas also played in the victories against Brentford in the Play Off Semi-Final and in the 4-2 victory against Hartlepool at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.


Lucas made 18 appearances in the Championship for Wednesday last season. Appearances were limited due to suffering cartridge damage to his knee in training in November 2005. Lucas returned to fitness but suffered cruciate ligament damage to his right knee in the 1-0 victory at Millwall on 4 February 2006. This was to be his final game for the Owls after 69 appearances.


After leaving Wednesday in the summer of 2006, Lucas joined his old PNE colleagues Simon Davey and Ryan Kidd at Barnsley on 3 January 2007 and is still awaiting his debut for the Tykes.
