Player Profile – Derek Lewis

Derek Ivor Edwin Lewis was born in Edmonton on 10 June 1929. He started his career with Fulham but did not make a first team appearance. In May 1950 Lewis joined Gillingham and made his Gills debut in a 1-0 home victory over Bristol Rovers on 13 September 1950. Three days later on his second appearance he scored a hat-trick in a 4-1 win over Walsall. He scored his second hat-trick of the season on his eighth appearance as Gillingham beat Exeter 9-4. Gillingham finished in 22nd position in Division Three South as Lewis scored 9 league goals from 20 matches to finish with 31 goals from48 league matches.

The 1951/52 season saw the Gills finish in the same position as the previous season even though Lewis finished top scorer with 22 goals from just 28 appearances. Lewis scored seven braces during the season including on three consecutive games. His final appearances for the Gills saw Lewis score twice in a 4-4 draw at home to Crystal Palace on 16 February 1952.

Lewis joined Preston and made his debut in a 1-1 draw at home to Manchester City on 1 March 1953. His first goal came on his third appearance two weeks later in a 2-2 draw against Aston Villa at Deepdale. The 1952/53 season saw Lewis score twice from nine appearances.

The following season saw him play his first match of the season in October, scoring in a 1-1 draw at Portsmouth. Lewis scored a brace on two occasions during the season inside a month with a 2-1 home win over Chelsea on 28 February and a 3-0 win at Bolton on 25 March.

His final goal for the Lilywhites came in his penultimate match with a 2-0 win at Manchester City on 22 April with his last match three days later saw PNE beat Arsenal 2-0.

Lewis had scored 14 goals from 37 appearances and had been tipped as a future England International when he died suddenly on 13 July 1953 with a brain haemorrhage.
