Rovers finished mid table. The following season saw Stewart score 11 goals but  Rovers was relegated at the end of the season eight points adrift of Cambridge in 23rd position.

Stewart was limited to 29 appearances and 5 goals in 1993/94 but scored in a ration of more than 1 goal in 2 games the following season scoring 15 goals in 29 appearances helping helped him to break a 39 year club record by scoring in 9 consecutive games. Rovers reached the Play Offs and scored in the final at Wembley against Huddersfield.

Stewart’s scored the club’s quickest league goal in 28 seconds against Hull. His goal tally of 21 league goals in 1995/96 plus a League Cup hat-trick against Gillingham and selection in the Second Division PFA team led him to sign for First Division Huddersfield Town on 2nd July 1996 for £1,200,000 as a replacement for Andy Booth, Stewart had scored 57 goals in 171 appearances for Bristol Rovers.

His debut for Huddersfield was on 17th August 1996 in a 2-0 victory against Charlton. Three days later Stewart scored a hat-trick in a 3-0 victory against Wrexham. Stewart scored 7 goals in 20 appearances including a brace in a 3-2 victory against Oldham in September 1996.  Stewart scored 15 goals in 1997/98 season, increasing to 22 goals in 43 appearances in 1998/99, this included an hat-trick in a 4-0 win at home to Crystal Palace a week after Huddersfield was thrashed by Barnsley 7-1.

Stewart’s final game for Huddersfield was to score both goals in a 2-2 draw away at Crystal Palace on 29th January 2000. After 58 goals in 133 appearances Stewart signed for Ipswich for £2,500,000.

Stewart scored on his debut in a 2-0 victory at Barnsley, and again the following week in a 2-1 victory against his previous club Huddersfield. Stewart didn’t score in his next 8 matches until the play offs, scoring both goals in the fist leg 2-2 draw at Bolton and one in the 4- 2 Play Off Final victory against Barnsley.  Stewart was also selected for the First Division PFA team

Stewart’s first season in the Premiership in 2000/01 season netted 19 goals including a hat-trick at Southampton in April 2001 helping Ipswich to 5th position. He scored in 7 consecutive games for Ipswich and was only beaten as the Premiership leading scorer on the last day of the season.

The 2001/02 season Stewart missed much of the early part of the campaign due to breaking his cheekbone in a ‘training ground incident’ and scored 6 goals in 28 appearances although he did score a brace in a 3-1 UEFA Cup victory at Helsingborgs. The season ended in disappointment as Ipswich finished 18th and were relegated to Division One.

Stewart’s last game for Ipswich was a 2-1 defeat at home to Bradford City on 26th August 2001. Stewart had made 75 appearances scoring 27 goals before his £3,250,000 move to Sunderland and penned a three year deal at the same time as Tore André Flo.

Stewart didn’t receive many first team opportunities in his first season as Flo partnered Kevin Phillips in attack. Stewart did make his debut on 10th September 2002 in a 3-0 defeat at Middlesbrough, but only scored one goal in his 18th appearance as Sunderland lost 2-1 at home to West Brom. Sunderland was relegated from the Premiership in 2002/03.  Stewart did score in the League Cup, including a hat-trick in a 7-0 demolition at Cambridge and a brace in a 3-2 victory at Arsenal.

The mass exodus meant that Stewart partnered Kevin Kyle in attack, Stewart scored his first goal of the 2003/04 season in a 2-0 victory at Preston, and scored in the following 3 matches all won by Sunderland. His 14 league goals including match winners against Crystal Palace, Walsall and Wimbledon help Sunderland reach the Play Offs. Despite scoring the winner against Crystal Palace in the second leg, Sunderland lost on penalties.

The 2004/05 started brightly for Stewart scoring in 3 of his first four games and scored a hat-trick on 11th September 2004 in a 4-0 victory at Gillingham. Stewart then hit a dry spell in not scoring in the next 15 games before scoring the winner against Nottingham Forest to put Sunderland top of the table at the end of 2004. Stewart scored his second hat-trick of the season against Watford in February 2005. Stewart’s final goal in a Sunderland shirt was in a 2-1 victory at home to Leicester as Sunderland won the Championship. Stewart was informed that his contract would not be renewed and hours after his final match against Stoke he opened talks with Bristol City. Stewart had made 102 appearances scoring 31 goals for Sunderland.

Although there was interest form Queens Park Rangers, Stewart decided to move back home and sign for the club he watched as a youngster and completed a free transfer move to Bristol City on 6th June 2005.

Stewart was awarded the captaincy just prior to his debut in a 0-0 draw at home to Doncaster and scored his first goal for the club two weeks later in his fourth appearance as City beat Port Vale 4-2.

Unfortunately his spell with the Ashton Gate club turned sour and Stewart made the last of his 27 appearances against Nottingham Forest in a 1-1 draw on 4th March 2006, he had scored five goals.

Following the injury to David Nugent, Preston required an experienced forward to push for the Play Offs and Billy Davies turned to Marcus Stewart. Stewart made his debut for Preston in a 0-0 draw against Plymouth on 25th March 2006 and made a further three league appearances against Crewe, Coventry and Norwich. Although he didn’t score in the games, Stewart finished on the winning side in all three games.

Stewart’s final appearance for PNE was in the second leg Play Off defeat against Leeds and returned to uncertainty of Bristol City.

As the current campaign started Stewart was not in the picture at Ashton Gate and moved on a three month loan to Yeovil on 30th August 2006, scoring on his debut in a 1-1 draw at Swansea. Stewart made 13 appearances, scoring 5 goals during his loan spell. The34 year old agreed an 18 month deal with Yeovil to start on 1st January 2007 after the remainder of this contract with Bristol City was terminated. In total he netted 8 goals from 31 league appearances during the season as Yeovil finish fifth in League One and scored in the Play off final second leg victory over Nottingham Forest. He also played in the Play Off Final but the Glovers lost 2-0 to Blackpool.

The 2007/08 season saw Stewart score 4 goals from 36 appearances and made his last appearance for Yeovil in the 3-2 defeat to Nottingham Forest on 3 May 2008. He had scored 12 goals in 67 appearances for Yeovil.

Stewart joined Exeter and made 85 League appearances for the club and scored 9 goals. His last league appearance was a 2-0 victory against his first club Bristol Rovers on 9 April 2011.
