Player Profile - William Henderson

 

William Henderson was born in Edinburghin 1889 and played in the centre-forward position. Having come through the ranks of Edinburgh Schools and St.Bernards FC he joined Airdrieonians in 1920.

 

In November 1921 he moved South and joined Manchester United and scored in his debut against Aston Villa. He struggled to get a regular spot in the team until 1924/25. He was the top scorer with 14 goals, including a hat-trick against Oldham as United were on course for promotion when he joined Prestoni n January 1925 after 17 goals from 34 league appearances.

 

Henderson made his Lilywhite debut in a 2-0 defeat at Tottenham on 7 February. He made five appearances before losing the number nine shirt. A month later he returned for his final four appearances, he scored is only goal for the club in a 1-1 draw at home to Everton on 10 April. His last appearance was three days later with a 0-0 draw against the same opposition.

 

Preston was relegated at the end of the 1924/25 season and joined Clapham Orient. He scored 7 goals from 29 appearances with his only season for Orient.

 

For the next two seasons he returned to Scotland with a season each with Hearts and Morton. In 1928/29 Henderson joined Torquay and netted 10 league goals in 15 appearances. For the 1929/30 he stayed in the South West with Exeter. Exeterfinished in 16th position in Division Three South and made 5 appearances. After his one season with Exeter,Henderson decided to retire, he past away in Rosyth in 1964.
