Player Profile – Ken Cameron

 

Kenneth Cameron was born in Hamilton in 1905 and played as an inside-forward. He was signed by Preston in 1926 from Scottish junior football side Parkhead.

 

He made his debut on 11 December 1926 when the Second Division club won 1-0 at Darlington. He made a further 7 appearances during the season scoring his first goal in a 4-1 win at home to Blackpool on 19 March 1927 on his third appearance.

 

He following season he only made 4 appearances and scored a hat-trick on the final day of the season as Preston won 6-4 at Grimsby, although PNE led 6-0 with just six minutes to go!

 

The goals dried up in 1928/29 and made his last appearance in a 0-0 draw against Middlesbrough on 5 January 1929 after scoring a total of 5 goals from 24 appearances.

 

It was Middlesbrough that Cameron joined on 18 March 1929. He did not make an appearance during the season as Boro’ won the Second Division title.

 

Cameron made his debut for Middlesbrough netting a brace in a 5-2 defeat at West Ham. He also scored in his next two away matches against Sheffield United and Bolton. Cameron scored 5 goals from 11 appearances the 1930/31 season.

 

Cameron scored 8 goals from 32 appearances in 1931/32 as the club finished seventhwith 5 goals in the final 9 matches of the season.

 

He reached double figures for the first time in 1931/32, netting 11 goals from 38 appearances including 4 goals in 3 matches including a brace in a 4-3 home victory over Sheffield United on 5 December 1931.

 

At the start of the 1932/33 season Cameron netted 5 goals in his first 5 matches of the season. This included a brace on two occasions with home wins against Manchester City (3-2) and Portsmouth (5-4) and totalled 6 goals from 17 matches during the season. He made is one and last appearance for Middlesbrough in 1933/34 in a 5-2 defeat at Leeds on 28 August. Cameron had scored 30 goals from 99 appearances.

 

Cameron joined Second Division Bolton and netted on debut  in a 1-1 draw at Deepdale  on 14 August . In total he scored twice in 21 appearances in 1933/34 as Wanderers finished third. Cameron made just 3 appearances, scoring once as Bolton finished runners-up to Brentford in his first match of the season in a 6-2 defeat at Sheffield United on 29 September 1934. His next match was the return fixture on 9 February.

 

For the 1935/36, Cameron remained in the Second Division having joined Hull. He netted on debut in a 1-1 draw at home against Fulham on 31 August and scored 6 goals in his first 10 matches for the club.and although he had his most successful season in front of goal with 12 goals from 30 games they finished bottom and was relegated

 

The 1936/37 season saw Cameron join Third Division South side QPR. His debut was a 3-2 defeat at Bristol City on 29 August. His first four matches were all away and ended in defeat. His fifth game for QPR was his home debut and netted in the 2-1 defeat against Bournemouth on 10 April. His next match a week later saw his first of two victories with a 1-0 win at Northampton. His eighth and final match as a 3-1 home defeat to Crystal Palace on 1 May.

 

He joined Third Division North side Rotherham for 1937/38 campaign but did not make a league appearance.
