Player Profile - Marlon Broomes

Marlon Charles Broomes was born on 28 November 1977 in Birmingham

Broomes started his career as a trainee at Blackburn. He was signed up by then Rovers manager Kenny Dalglish on 1 August 1994, but at first he couldn't break into the Rovers team. On 22 January 1997 he was loaned out to Swindon and made his league debut three days later in a 3-3 home draw against Grimsby. Broomes made 12 appearances and scored once in a two month loan spell, the goal coming in a 3-1 home victory over Birmingham.

In the 1997/98 season new Rovers manager Roy Hodgson give Broomes his Rovers debut in a 6-0 win over Preston in the League Cup in September 2007 but had to wait unit the following February before his Premiership debut in the 3-0 defeat at Southampton. The defender made 4 appearances in the first team that season. His only Rovers goal came in a 3-12 defeat at Huddersfield on 13 August 1999. Broomes made 32 appearances for Blackburn and his last appearance was in a 6-1 League Cup win over Rochdale on 6 September 2000.

In October 2001 Broomes was loaned out to Queens Park Rangers and made his debut on 25 October in a 2-1 home defeat to Sheffield Wednesday. Broomes made a further 4 appearances for QPR but never finished on a winning side. His last game for the club was a 2-2 draw at Stockport on 11 November 2001.

After falling out of favour under new manager Graham Souness, on 7 September 2001 he was loaned out to Grimsby for three months, where he played 15 times. Although he didn't score a league goal, Broomes did find the net twice in the League Cup including in a 2-1 away win over holders Liverpool.

He then returned to Blackburn and following their promotion back to the Premier League in the2001/02 season, Broomes was released on a free transfer on 12 December 2001.

At Wednesday he made 19 league appearances but was released at the end of the 2001/02.

Broomes then spent most of the pre-season at Burnley. However, on 7 August 2002 he signed for Preston on a three year contract by Craig Brown.

Broomes made his North End debut in a 1-1 draw at Gillingham on 26 August 2002, before being replaced by Dickson Etuhu. He made 28 appearances during the season and a further 30 appearances in the 2003/04 season.

Broomes made 69 league appearances for Preston his last appearance was as a substitute for Eddie Lewis in the 0-0 draw in the Second leg of the Play Off Semi Final. Preston reached the final but Broomes was an un-used substitute in the defeat against West Ham in the Final.

In August 2005, he signed a three year contract with fellow Championship club, Stoke in a swap deal which involved Lewis Neal moving from Stoke to Preston.

Broomes made his debut in the 0-0 draw at home to Sheffield Wednesday on 26 August 2005 and scored in his second appearance three days later in the 4-2 defeat at Leicester. Broomes made 37 appearances during the season, mainly at full-back, scoring twice.

He ruptured his Achilles tendon prior to the start of the 2006/07 season and spent the entire season on the sidelines as a result. He played his first game for over twelve months on 10 August 2007 in a 1-0 friendly win against Alsager Town.

However, he made no appearances in the 2007/08 season and following the clubs promotion to the Premier League, he was released by the club at the end of the season.

On 4 June 2008, Broomes agreed to join Blackpool on a twelve-month contract with an option for a further year. Broomes made his debut as a substitute against a former club QPR on 30 September 2008. This was his first match since 15 April 2006 when Stoke lost at home to Southampton.

At International level Broomes played for the England under 19's and was called up into the England under 21 squad in the 1997/98 season. He played twice for the Under 21's and took part in the 1997 FIFA World Youth Championship.
