Player Profile – Jack Mustard

 

John Jack Mustard was born in Boldon in 1905 and in his 12 year career the winger played for 12 different clubs.

 

After starting with Boldon Colliery welfare and Crawcrook Albion Mustard joined third Division South Side QPR in October 1926. The 1926/27 season saw Mustard score twice in 14 appearances as QPR finished in fourteenth position.

 

The following season saw QPR finish four places higher and scored twice again during the season from 23 appearances. He didn’t make an appearance in 1928/29 and after the 37 League appearances, Mustard joined Third Division North side South Shields.

 

He scored 4 goals from 31 appearances in 1929/30 before joining Wrexham from the same division for 1930/31.

 

Mustard scored 14 of the 94 goals during the season as the club finished third. He also won a Welsh Cup winners’ medal as Shrewsbury were beaten 7-0 He was not so prolific in 1931/32 netting 3 goals from 29 appearances and got a Welsh Cup runners-up medal in this season.                                                                                               

After 70 league appearances for Wrexham Mustard joined second division Preston  for 1932/33. He made is debut in the second match of the season as the Lilywhites beat Burnley 6-1 on 29 August. Although he didn’t score in the match he helped Ted Harper with three of his four goals.

 

His first goal came in a 1-0 win at Charlton on 17 September 1932 as he scored a further three goals in his next four appearances. He scored his final goal for the club against the same opposition on his fifteenth and last appearances as PNE won 4-2 at Deepdale on 28 January 1933.

 

He joined Burnley for 1932/33 and made 15 appearances with 4 goals whist at Turf Moor before joining Southend during the 1933/34 season.

 

The 1934/35 season saw him join Crewe and his have his best ever goal tally during that season with 17 from 38 games, two behind top scorer Bert Swindells.

 

He joined Wrexham for the second time in 1935/36 before signing for his final league cub New Brighton. He spent two seasons with the Third Division North club, netting 11 goals in 78 appearances.
