Player Profile - Jimmy Gooch

James Arthur George Gooch was born in West Ham on 11 July 1921. Gooch was a policeman in London and joined Preston from Beacontree in 1942 and made 3 appearances during the North Division / War Cup Second competition between 27 December 1941 and May 30 1942.

Gooch was the understudy goalkeeper to Jack Fairbrother and just made one appearance in the 1946/47 season. This was in a 2-2 draw at home to Wolves on 23 November 1946.

With the departure of Fairbrother to Newcastle in the summer of 1947 Gooch took over the number one shirt and made 34 appearances. After finishing seventh in Division One in the last two seasons, Preston was relegated at the end of the 1948/49 season. After playing in the first two matches on the season, injuries limited to making just 16 appearances as he missed five months of the season. The following season saw Gooch share the jersey with Malcolm Newlands as Gooch made 27 appearances.

Gooch took over the reins again in November 1950 and kept the jersey for the remainder of the season as Preston won the Second Division title. Gooch also made his 100th league appearance in a 1-0 victory at home to Hull on 21 April 1951.

The 1951/52 season saw Gooch play the first 34 matches of the season. His 135th and last game was in a 4-3 defeat at Derby on 8 March 1952.

Gooch did not make any appearances during 1952/53 and joined Bradford for the start of the 1953/54 season. He only stayed for one season as he made 22 league appearances as Bradford finished fifth in Division Three North

Gooch joined Watford in the summer of 1954 but it was the 1955/56 season before he made his first appearance. During this season Gooch made 14 appearances as Watford finished fourth from bottom in Division Three South.

The 1956/57 was the last for Gooch in league football as he made 29 league appearances as Watford finished eleventh.

Gooch had spells in the non-league with Bath City and Hillingdon Borough. Gooch also worked on North End's administrative staff until 1991 and he passed away in 2001.
