Player Profile – George Thompson
George Herbert Thompson was born in Maltby on 15 September 1926. He started his career with Chesterfield but the goalkeeper did not make a league appearance for the club.
For the 1950/51 season Thompson joined Scunthope and made his league debut in a 0-0 home draw to Shrewsbury on 19 August 1950. He made 41 league appearances during the season and kept 15 clean sheets.
The following season Thompson made 36 league appearances and 5 league clean sheets. His final season with the club was in 1952/53. His last game was a 1-0 victory on 18 October 1952 against Tranmere which was his 92nd appearance.
Thompson joined First Division Preston and made his debut I appearances and n a 5-2 win at Portsmouth on 25 October and made 30 appearances with 10 clean sheets as the Lilywhites finished runners-up.
The 1953/54 season saw Thompson make 39 league appearances with 8 clean sheets, culminating in an FA Cup Runners up medal in the 3-2 defeat against West Brom at Wembley.
Thompson made 37 appearances in 1954/55, with his 100th league game being a 1-0 win against Tottenham on 12 March 1955. His last season with the club was in 1955/56, his 140th and his final match being a 2-1 home win over Portsmouth on 24 March 1955.
Thompson joined Manchester City but just made 2 appearances in August 1955 before joining Carlisle the following season He stayed for four seasons and was an ever present for the 1959/60 and 1960/61 seasons. His final league match after 202 appearances was a 5-2 defeat against Mansfield on 17 March 1962.
