Player Profile GRAHAM CROSS

Graham Frederick Cross was born in Leicester on 15 November 1943. Cross joined his home town club at the age of 15.


In his 16 seasons at Filbert Street, Cross made 599 appearances for Leicester City (498 in the league; 59 in the FA Cup; 40 in the League Cup and 2 in the Cup Winners Cup), scoring 37 goals. Cross holds the Foxes record in appearing in the most cup matches in both competitions.


Cross could adapt from defence to midfield to attack but settled to a more familiar role in the centre back role. Cross also made 11 England under 23 appearances in 1962/63, 1963/64 and 1965/66.


His debut was on 29 April 1961 at home to Birmingham scoring 1 goal. The following week Cross watched from the stands as Tottenham defeated Leicester 2-0 in the FA Cup Final at Wembley. Leicester's first appearance in the FA Cup Final since 1949.


Cross played in four cup finals for Leicester. In 1963 Leicester defeated Manchester United 3-1 in the FA Cup Final. The following year was a 4-3 aggregate League Cup Final victory over Stoke. In 1965 Leicester lost to Chelsea 3-2 on aggregate in the League Cup Final. In 1969 Leicester lost against Manchester City 1-0 in the FA Cup Final.


1968/69 season saw Leicester relegated with QPR as the Foxes finished in 21st position after winning only one away game all season.

Cross played in every league match for Leicester between 1969/70 and 1970/71, missing out on a return to Division One after finishing third in 1969/70. The following season Cross won a Second Division Medal as they won the Second Division Championship, 3 points above runners-up Sheffield United.


In the following four seasons Cross only missed 10 league games making 39 appearances in 1971/72 and 1972/73 and 40 appearances in 1973/74 and 1974/75.


In May 1974, 18,000 fans paid tribute to Cross against Derby in his testimonial match and at the final whistle hundreds invaded the pitch to hoist the player shoulder high.


Cross also played County Cricket for Leicestershire from 1961 to 1971, returning for two further seasons in 1975 and 1976. Cross was suspended by Leicester City in July 1975 for failing to report for pre-season training. Cross scored 2079 runs in 83 matches at an average of 18.39 with a highest score of 78 against Hampshire in 1964 and acquired 92 wickets at an average of 29.95 with a best of 4-28 against Lancashire in 1970.


Cross made his last two appearances for Leicester in the 1975/76 season before going on loan to Third Division Chesterfield in March 1976 making 12 appearances.


In June 1976 Cross signed for Brighton and played in every game as Brighton were promotion to Division Two as runners-up to Mansfield.


In August 1977 Cross signed for Preston with Harry Wilson as replacements for Gary Williams and Mark Lawrenson who had moved to Brighton. Cross made his first appearances for Preston in the League Cup ties against Port Vale. His league debut for PNE was a goalless draw at Plymouth on 20 August 1977.


Cross made 40 appearances that season for PNE scoring 1 goal, (in a 2-1 victory against Sheffield Wednesday at Deepdale on 4 August) as Preston finished third and Nobby Stiles side was promoted to Division Two.

Cross made five appearances for Preston in the 1978/79 season, his final game on 2 September 1978 in a 3-1 defeat at Sunderland .


The following season Cross had a brief spell at Enderby Town before joining Lincoln in March 1979 and made19 appearances, but could not save them from relegation as they finished bottom of Division Three. His final phase of his soccer involvement was a spell as Hinckley Athletic manager from the West Midlands League Regional Premier Division.
