Player Profile – David Sneddon

David (Davie) Sneddon was born in Kilwinning on 24 April 1936 and played in the inside forward position. After playing for Kilwinning Ranges he joined Scottish First Division side Dundee in 1954 and scored 13 goals from 60 appearances before joining Prestonin 1959.

Sneddon made his Lilywhite debut on the final day of the 1958/59 season in a 2-2 draw against Tottenham at Deepdale on 25 April 1959. He replaced Jimmy Baxter who returned to his home town club of Barnsley in the summer of 1959. Also in 1959 Sneddon made his only Scottish Under 23 appearance against Wales

His first League goal for PNE came on his seventh appearance with a 2-1 defeat at Burnley on 8 September. He only missed two matches during the season and scored 11 league goals including a spell of 4 goals in 5 matches in March / April 1960. He also played in Tom Finney’s last match against Luton on 30 April as Preston finished ninth in Division One.

The retirement of Finney saw Preston relegated to Division Two at the end of the 1960/61 season. Sneddon scored 5 goals from 37 appearances during the season and two of these came in a 3-2 home defeat to Newcastle on the opening day of the season.

His last goal game in a 3-1 home defeat to Liverpool on 4 November 1962, with his final game for the club coming the following week in a 2-0 defeat to Norwich, he had netted 17 goals from 91 appearances for North End.

Sneddon signed for Kilmarnock in November 1961 for a fee of £17,000. His first match for Killie was against Stirling Albion on 18 November 1961

He will best be remembered for scoring Killie's first goal in the dramatic League decider against Hearts at Tynecastle on 24th April 1965. Kilmarnock won the match 2-0 and brought the title back to RugbyPark, This was the only time thay have won the League title. Sneddon's last game for Killie was against St Johnstone on 25th March 1967 as a substitute, when he left to join Raith Rovers for a fee of £3,000. In total Sneddon had scored 21 goals from 152 appearances for Killie.

After scoring 9 league goals from 91 appearances for Raith he returned to Kilmarnock as reserve team trainer in 1972 and stayed in that position for five years.

He became their Manager in 1977 replacing Willie Fernie and won promotion back to the top flight in 1979.

One of his greatest triumphs was winning, against all odds, the Tennents Caledonian Cup pre-season tournament at Ibrox, fighting back from two goals down with minutes left and eventually winning on penalties.

Sneddon left the club in January 1981, (Killie were relegated in 1980/81 winning only 5 of 36 matches). He was later manager of Stranraer, before returning to Kilmarnock. He became Chief Scout and now works on match days in the club's hospitality suite.

His long service and very significant achievements were recognised in 2008 by East Ayrshire Council with the new housing complex next to Rugby Park being named ‘Davie Sneddon Way’
