Player Profile – Joe Hinnigan

Joseph (Joe) Peter Hinnigan was born in Liverpool on 3 December 1955. He started his career with South Liverpool after being released as a youth by both Everton and Aston Villa.

Hinnigan joined Wigan in the summer of 1975 when they were still playing in the Northern Premier League. He made 120 NPL appearances. Wigan gained promotion to the Football League for the 1978/79 season and made his league debut on the opening day of the season in a 0-0 draw against Hereford on 19 August. Hinnigan scored his first league goal and the first Wigan league goal at the fourth attempt as Wigan lost 3-2 at home to Newport on 2 September.

Hinnigan scored 5 goals from 39 matches as Wigan finished sixth in their first league season. The following season Wigan obtained the same position with Hinnigan netting a further 5 goals from 27 appearances before joining Sunderland for £135,000 in February 1980.

Hinnigan made his Sunderland debut on 23 February 1980 in a 1-0 win at home to Luton and played in the remaining 14 matches of the season.

The 1980/81 season saw Hinnigan score his first goal for the club with a 2-1 defeat against Aston Villa on 7 March 1981. Hinnigan then scored in the next two matches with victories over Crystal Palace on 14 March and a brace in a 3-0 win over Coventry on 21 March. These were his only goals for the club in 63 appearances.

Hinnigan joined Preston in December 1982 but had to wait until 19 March before his Lilywhites debut in a 2-1 home win over Cardiff. Hinnigan played in the last 13 matches of the season with only being on the losing side once. This was in a 3-2 defeat at Bristol Rovers in which he scored, although his first PNE goal came on his fourth appearance in a 4-1 home win over Doncaster on 2 April.

Hinnigan scored 5 goals in 33 appearances in 1983/84 plus a brace in a 3-2 home win over Wolves in the first leg, Second Round Milk Cup tie. His final appearance came in a 2-1 defeat at home to Bradford on 5 May 1984.

In August 1984 Hinnigan joined Third Division Gillingaham and stayed for three years as the Gills just missed promotion on each occasion finishing fourth once and fifth twice, scoring 7 goals from 103 league appearances.

Hinnigan joined Wrexham foe one season in July 1987 with one goal in 29 appearances before finishing his league career with Chester when he joined in August 1988 with 2 goals from 54 appearances in two seasons.

After finishing his playing career in 1990, Hinnigan began the first of four spells as a physio and coach with Chester. He also worked at Wigan, Rochadle and Bury (all alongside manager Graham Barrow), before moving from Chester to become physio Shrewsbury in October 2006 under former PNE manager Gary Peters. It was another former PNE manager Paul Simpson who released him in 2008 stating he was under qualified. He has been the physio at Accrington Stanley since 2008.
