Player Profile – Alf Toward
Alfred Vickers Toward was born in Castleside in 1882. He started his career with Hull and scored on debut in a 4-0 win against Barnsley on 23 January 1909. Toward scored a brace on his third appearance in a 3-0 win over Fulham on 17 April 1909. During the season he scored 5 goals in 6 appearances and scored 6 in 10 matches in his Hull career.
Toward joined Oldham for the 1910/11 season and made his Latics debut on New Year’s Day 1911 in a 1-0 win over Glossop. His first goal came 2 weeks later on his fourth appearance in a 2-1 defeat against Aston Villa in the FA Cup. In March 1911 Toward netted 9 goals in 8 appearances including a brace on two occasions in victories over Bradford Park Avenue and Grimsby. His first hat-trick came in a 5-0 win over Clapham Orient on 16 April and finished the season with 13 goals from 21 league appearances.
The following season Toward scored 12 goals from 23 league appearances and scored a brace four times include one in a 2-1 win over Preston on 22 October 1910. His last appearance was a 0-0 draw at West Brom on 29 April 1912. He was limited to just 5 appearances in 1911/12, before scoring twice in 18 appearances in 1912/13 and reached the Semi-Final of the FA Cup. His final game for the club was a 1-1 draw against Burnley on 4 October 1913. Toward had netted 30 goals from 72 league appearances.
Toward joined Preston and made his PNE debut on 11 October in a 1-0 defeat at his former club Oldham. His first goal came on his third appearance in a 2-1 at home to Burnley two weeks later. His second goal came in the return fixture at Turf Moor with a 4-3 win in February. He scored 4 goals in 18 appearances as PNE finished in 19th position and relegation from Division One.
His final season was in 1914/15 and scored 4 goals in 12 appearances. This includes a brace in a 2-0 home win over Birmingham on 2 April. His final game was the return fixture three days later at Birmingham in a 1-1 draw.
Alf Toward died in 1962.
