William Jessop was born in Preston on 2nd April 1922. A product of Preston North End's youth system he made the first team during the Second World War.
An outside left, Jessop played 25 games in the Preston team that won the 1940/1941 North Regional League title. Preston also won the 1941 Football League War Cup and scored in the 2-1 home victory over Bury on 22 February. He also scored in the next match on 1 March 1941 in a 4-1 win at Bolton.
After his career was interrupted by the Second World War, he finally made his Lilywhites league debut in a 2-0 defeat at Middlesbrough on 21 September 1946. Jessop only made 4 appearances for PNE, his last was a 3-0 defeat at Liverpool on 7 April 1946. His only win for the Lilywhites came in a 2-0 win at Sunderland in his penultimate match for the club on 30 November.
Jessop was sold to Stockport in April 1947 and scored his first league goal on his County debut in a 4-2 home win over York on 31 May. This was the only match for Stockport in the 1946/47 campaign. Jessop scored 3 goals from 16 appearances in 1947/48.
In February 1948 he moved to Oldham and scored a brace in a 5-3 win at Gateshead on 21 February. He was on the winning team also for his home debut a week later with a 3-0 victory New Brighton. These were his only goals for the Latics in 1947/48 in 9 appearances but was on the losing side only twice.
Jessop netted 4 goals in 17 league appearances in 1948/49 and had his most successful season in front of goal in his league career in 1949/50 with 8 goals in 41 matches.
His last Oldham home match saw him on 1 May in a 2-2 draw against Bradford City on 1 May 1951. His last match 4 days later ended with a 3-1 defeat at Rotherham. Jessop had scored 16 goals from 94 matches.
In June 1951 Jessop joined Wrexham, he netted twice in 14 appearances in 1951/52 before moving into non-league with Bloxwich Strollers in 1952, Nuneaton Borough a year later with Rugby Town and Hinckley Athletic in 1958.
William Jessop died in 1994.
