Player Profile – Jimmy Chalmers

James  (Jimmy) Chalmers was born in Old Luce, Scotland on 3 December 1877. The Winger made his league debut with First Division Sunderland in a 1 -0 win at The Wednesday on 4 September 1897. A week later he made his home debut with a 3-2 victory over Wolves. His first defeat was on his third appearance for the Black Cats with a 2-0 defeat at Deepdale. Chalmers first goal came on his sixth appearance with a 2-1 win at home to Derby on 9 October. Sunderland finished the season in second position.

His first season saw his score the most league goals in a single season with 5 from 23 appearances, this included a brace in a 4-0 home win over Nottingham Forest on 23 Aril 1898.

The 1898/99 season saw him make just 3 further appearances with one goal. This goal came on his first match of the season with a 3-2 win at Preston on 3 September. His final match for Sunderland came three weeks later with a 0-0 draw at home to Bolton.

It was Preston who Chalmers joined next making his Lilywhite debut with a 3-1 defeat at Bury on 5 November 1898. Chalmers scored his first goal for the club on his second match a week later with another 3-1 away defeat, this at against Liverpool  He had to wait for his on his fourth  appearance and his home debut for his first win as PNE defeated Nottingham Forest 1-0 on 19 November. Chalmers scored his second goal in his next home appearance with a 3-1 victory against Derby on 3 December. His last gaol for the club came in a 7-0 win against Second Division Grimsby in the FA Cup on 8 January. Chalmers many 10 league appearances for Preston in his only season for the club.

Chalmers joined Notts County for the 1899/1900 season and made his County debut with a 1-0 victory over Derby on 2 September 1899. A week later he made his Magpie home debut with a 2-2 draw against Bury. He had to wait for his 13th league match before his first goal against Wolves on 13 January 1900 with a 2-2 draw. Two weeks later he scored again with a 6-0 win at home to non-league Chorley. His last Notts County goal came in a 3-0 victory at Nottingham Forest on 17 March. Chalmers made 25 league appearances for the Magpies during this season, his final match was a 2-2 at home to Everton on 21 April 1900.
