Player Profile – Lee Ashcroft

Lee Ashcroft was born in Preston on 7 September 1972. He made his Football League debut aged 18 for his home town club in a 2-1 defeat atWiganon 3 November 1990 as a substitute for Adrian Hughes. His first goal came also as a substitute, replacing Ronnie Jepson who had scored a hat-trick in a 6-1 win over Burnleyin the Leyland Daf Cup on 19 February 1991.

He became a regular in 1991/92 making 38 appearances and scored 5 goals. He played for Englandunder-21s whilst at Preston when on 12 May 1992 in Budapest, Ashcroft came on as a substitute for his only under-21 cap against Hungary in a 2-2 draw.

The following season Ashcroft scored 7 goals in 39 appearances, including 3 in the first 6 matches. His last game of his first spell was a 2-0 defeat on 27 April 1993 with a total of 13 goals from 91 appearances.

In August 1993 he moved to West Brom for £250,000. He scored a vital headed goal on the final day of the 1993/94 season, in a 1-0 win at Portsmouth, to keep Albioni n the First Division.

With having difficulty holding a first team place, Ashcroft was loaned out to NottsCountyin March 1996, making 6 appearances. He was loaned out again in September 1996, this time to his former club Preston, whom he then re-joined on a permanent deal two months later.

The 1996/97 Ashcroft scored 11 goals in all competitions including  a brace in two matches, with a 3-2 defeat against York in the FA Cup and a 2-1 win at Turf Moor on 26 January 1997.

The 1997/98 Ashcroft finished as top scorer for the Lilywhites with 14 league goals, including a hat-trick in  a 3-1 win at Deepdale against Fulham on 29 November 1997. He also scored in his last Preston match with a 2-1 win over BristolCityon the final day of the season on 2 May 1998. In his three spells Aschroft scored 35 goals in 155 appearances.

Ashcroft moved to Grimsbyfor £500,000 in August 1998. He was not a particularly popular figure at Grimsby, due mainly to a poor first season during which he was frequently injured for which still a record fee paid for Grimsby. In his second season, he found form and started scoring goals, but a falling out with his manager, Alan Buckley, led to a cut-price transfer at the end of the season, when after 15 goals from 61 appearances he moved to Wigan for £350,000.

While at Wigan, Ashcroft was loaned out to Port Vale in October 2002, followed by another loan move, to Huddersfield in December of the same year. Huddersfield were so short of funds at the time that the loan could only go through when a wealthy supporter John Smith agreed to fund it paying Ashcroft's wages plus a loan fee of around £10,000 but only made 4 appearances

Wigan eventually released Ashcroft on 6 February 2003 after 8 goals from 46 appearances, signaling the end of a professional career in which he had scored a total of 75 league goals. Later in the month he moved down to non-league Southport, taking up the role of player-coach at the age of 30.

A year later he moved to Kendal where he scored 23 goals in the 2004/05 season. In November 2006, Ashcroft, the club captain, was appointed the Kendal manager and signed a new four-year contract in August 2010.
