Player Profile Jimmy Chalmers

James (Jimmy) Chalmers was born in Old Luce on 3 December 1877. The winger started his career with Clyde and Greenock Morton before joining Sunderland for the start of the 1897/98 campaign.

Chalmers made his debut in a 1-0 win at The Wednesday on 4 September 1897. His first goal came on his sixth appearance in a 2-1 victory over Derby. A brace on the final day of the season on 23 April helped his side beat Nottingham Forest 4-0 and for the Wearsiders finished runners-up in Division One.

Chalmers scored on the opening day of the of the 1898/99 season in a 3-2 win at Preston on 3 September. His last match for Sunderland three weeks later was a 0-0 draw against Bolton. He had scored 6 goals from 26 matches.

Chalmers joined Preston and made his debut in a 3-1 defeat at Bury on 5 August. He scored on his next appearance in a 3-1 defeat at Liverpool a week later. His second league goal came the following month in a 3-1 victory at home to Derby. His final goal came in a 7-0 victory over Grimsby in the FA Cup on 28 January 1899. His tenth and last appearance came in a 2-1 defeat at Newcastle on 25 January.

For the start of the 1899/1900 season Chalmers joined Notts Co and made his debut in a 1-0 win at home to Derby on 2 September. His first goal came in a 2-2 draw at Wolves on 13 January, followed by a goal in the 6-0 FA Cup victory against Chorley two weeks later. His second league goal came in a 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest on 17 March. His 25th and last appearance came in a 2-0 defeat at Blackburn on 28 April. Notts County finished 15th in Division One.

Chalmers returned to Scotland with Partick Thistle before moving  into non-league football with Watford, Tottenham, Swinson, Norwich and Bristol Rovers.
