Player Profile – David Galloway

David Wilson Galloway was born in Kirkcaldy on 6 May 1905. He started his career with Raith Rovers before joining Aberdeen and scored once in 14 appearances for Aberseen. The Inside Forward then moved to England to start his Football League career with Second Division Preston.

His debut was a 5-0 defeat at Plymouth on 3 September 1932, followed two days later with a 4-0 defeat at Burnley. His first victory was on his third appearance and his home debut with a 2-1 win against Nottingham Forest. Galloway made 20 appearances with the club in the 1932/33 season with a record of won 6, drawn 3 and lost 11.

His first four matches of the 1933/34 campaign saw wins over Blackpool, Bradford Park Avenue and a double over Burnley. It was his second appearances of the season which saw his only goal for the club with a 3-2 victory over the Clarets on 28 August was at the same ground as his debut in Plymouth. This time the score was 0-0 on 10 February. At the end of the season saw PNE promoted to Division One, He had made 31 appearances for Preston.

For the 1934/35 season Galloway joined Second Division Port Vale but just stayed for one season. He made 12 league appearances but was only on the winning side three times. The first was on his home debut in a 4-1 win against Southampton on 3 September. This was a week after his club debut against the same opposition which finished 0-0.

Galloway joined Carlisle and stayed for three seasons netting 14 of his 15 career goals. His Carlisle debut was a 3-0 home victory over Darlington on 31 August 1935. The 1935/36 campaign was the most successful in front of goal with 7 goals in all competitions. His first goals were a brace in the Second Round of the Third Division Cup with a 6-2 home win over Gateshead on 4 January. This was followd up with his first League brace as Carlisle beat Mansfield 3-0 on 15 February.

Galloway was an ever-present in 1936/37 scoring 5 league goals in 42 appearances including a brace in the 4-1 home win over Rotherham on 27 February 1937.

His last appearance for Carlisle was a 1-0 home defeat to Rotherham on 7 May 1938. In total Galloway had scored 11 league goals in 109 appearances.

His last season was the 1938/39 campaign which saw Gallow move to Third Division South side Clapton Orient. He only made two appearances for the O’s both ending in defeats. These were a 3-1 defeat at home to Newport on 27 August and a 3-0 defeat at Northampton on 3 September 1938.

He spent the 1939/40 season with non-league Tunbridge Wells Ranges.
