Edward Lewis was born in Manchester on 3 February 1935. Lewis started his career with Goslings FC before joining Manchester United as an amateur in July 1949 before signing professionally in January 1952.

At the age of 17 he made his debut for United and scored in the match at West Brom on 29 November 1952. Lewis then scored in his next two matches at home to Blackpool and Derby, scoring 7 goals in 10 league matches. Appearances were limited due to the emergence of the Busby Babes such as Bobby Charlton and Dennis Violet and only made 10 league appearances in the next two seasons. The arrival at Old Trafford of Tommy Taylor from Barnsley led to Lewis joining Preston for a fee of £9,000 in December 1955. He had scored 9 goals from 20 appearances; his last game for the Red Devils was a 2-1 win over Everton on 7 September 1955.

Lewis made his debut and scored in a 3-2 defeat at Aston Villa on 10 December 1955. His first three matches for PNE were all defeats; his first win for the club was a Boxing Day 2-1 victory at Burnley. He made 11 appearances during the season and scored is only other goal for the Lilywhites in a 3-1 home victory over former club Manchester United on 21 January.

The only appearance in 1956/57 before joining West Ham in a swap for Frank O’Farrell in November 1956, this was in a 1-0 defeat at Chelsea on 25 August. Lewis scored on debut in a 2-1 home win over Leicester on 24 November. Lewis scored 9 in 24 matches including 5 in 6 matches between 9 February to 16 March.

The 1957/58 season he was part of the West Ham squad which won the Second Division title scoring 3 times in 7 matches and scored a brace in a 3-2 FA Cup win on 25 January 1958.

Lewis made 31 appearances and scored 12 goals before he joined Leyton Orient in June 1958. His debut was a 3-1 home defeat to Bristol Rovers on 23 August. His first victory came on his third appearance in a 2-1 win over Scunthorpe on 13 September. His first goal came on his ninth match with a 2-1 defeat at Cardiff on 6 December. Lewis scored twice in 14 appearances during the season and a brace in a 4-2 defeat at Blackburn on 10 January 1959.

He was converted from centre forward to full back with Leyton Orient in the 1959/60 campaign making 13 appearances.

Lewis scored a brace; both penalties in a 6-2 victory at Gillingham on 7 January 1961.He probably played his best season in that position and helped them to the runners up spot to Liverpool for the Second Division title in 1961/62 when he made 41 appearances. His only goal came in a 2-2 draw against champions Liverpool on 17 March 1962.

The 100th league appearance for Lewis for the O’s came in a 1-1 draw at Blackburn on 1 December 1963. Leyton Orient finished bottom of the First Division in 1962/63. His last match was a 2-1 defeat at Cardiff on 22 February 1964. In total he scored 5 goals in 143 league appearances before moving to non-league football in 1964.

He went on to play for Folkstone and later managed Clapton FC and Ford Sports FC in the Greeter London League.

In 1970 he emigrated to South Africa and he became an Insurance Salesman and coached a number of football clubs in South Africa.

Prior to illness he worked as an analyst for the TV sports station Supersport and also for PA Sports but remained as technical advisor for Moroka Swallows until his death on 2 May 2011 from Cancer in a Johannesburg hospital.
