Player Profile – Bill Henderson

William (Bill) Henderson was born in 1898 in Edinburgh.  He started with Manchester United and scored on debut in a 1-0 win over Aston Villa on 26 November 1921, He scored on his second home match with a 1-1 draw against Bradford. He made 10 appearances in 1921/22 but only made 3 appearances for the next two seasons.

His most profitable season in front of goal was in 1924/25 with 14 league goals in 22 matches. Henderson scored a hat-trick in a 3-0 win at Oldham on 20 August 1924. His last match was a 1-0 home defeat to Oldham on 24 January 1925.

 Henderson joined Preston and made his debut in a 2-0 defeat at Tottenham on 7 February 1925. He had to wait for his seventh appearance before he scored for the club in a 1-1 draw at home to Everton on 10 April. His ninth and last match for the Lilywhites came three days later in the return fixture at Goodison Park in a 0-0 draw. Preston were relegated from Division One.

Henderson joined Orient for 1925/26, making his debut in a 2-1 defeat at home to Port Vale on 29 August. He scored on his second appearance in a 3-1 defeat at Derby two days later. Henderson scored on his next two appearances including a 2-1 win on his home debut against Stockport. Henderson scored 7 goals from 29 appearances including scoring both goals in a 4-2 defeat against Port Vale on 2 January 1926. His last match was a 4-0 home win over Stoke on 13 March 1926.

Henderson had to wait until the 1928/29 season before his next appearance, scoring on debut in a 4-3 home defeat to QPR on 25 August. Henderson also scored in his next three home matches and finished with 10 from 25 league appearances.

Henderson joined Exeter the following season and was not on the winning side in his 5 matches for the club. His last league match was a 3-1 defeat at Norwich on 5 October  1929.

Bill Henderson passed away in 1964.
