Player Profile – Dickie Bourne

Richard ‘Dickie’ Bourne was born in the third quarter in 1878 in Manchester. The winger started his league career with Sheffield United, scoring on debut in a 2-0 home win over Newcastle on 8 December 1900. His second match was a week later but then had to wait three months for his third appearance with a 3-1 defeat at Deepale to PNE on 16 March 1901.

He made a further 4 appearances in 1901/02 to take his tally to 8. Bourne joined Barnsley making his debut in a 2-1 home victory over Stockport on 6 September 1902. He made 19 league appearances for the club, but his only goal came in a 3-2 home FA Cup win over Chesterfield His last appearance for Barnsley was a 1-1 draw at Burton on 4 April 1903.

Bourne made his Lilywhite debut 6 days later with a 3-1 home win over local rivals Blackpool. He made a further 4 appearances in April and was not on the losing side once.

The next two seasons saw his most successful in front of gaol with 3 goals in each season. His first goal for Preston came in a 2-0 win at Bolton on 19 September 1903. He had to wait for his 19th match for PNE before he tasted defeat with a 1-0 defeat against former club Barnsley. Bourne made 33 league appearances for the season as PNE won the Second Division title.

His 3 league goals in the 1904/05 season all came in November, but his last goal for Preston came in a 1-0 home FAC up replay victory against Bristol City on 23 February 1905. His last North End match was a 0-0 draw at Bury on 25 March 1905. In total for Preston Bourne had scored 6 goals from 62 league matches.

Bourne joined Clapham Orient and made his debut in a 2-1 defeat at Leicester Fosse on 2 September 1905. His first goal came on 18 November 1905 with a 3-1 FA Cup victory at non-league Leyton. Bourne made 37 league appearances during the season, his only league goal coming in a 3-1 defeat at Hull on 6 January 1906.

The 1906/07 season saw Bourne score his final goal for Orient on his second appearance for the season with a 3-1 win at Blackpool on 22 September. His 56th and last match for Clapham Orient was a 1-1 draw at home to West Brom on 9 February 1907.

It was the Baggies who he joined next and made his debut a week after playing against them in a 5-0 win at home to Gainsborough Trinity. His only goal for West Brom came on his 6th and penultimate match of the season with a 2-1 victory at home to Lincoln on 20th April. Bourne made his last two league appearances in 1907/08, with his final game being a 1-0 win at home to Leeds City on 25 January 1908.

Dickie Bourne passed away in 1957.
