Player Profile Jimmy Brown

James Keith Brown was born in Musselburgh on 3 October 1953. Brown signed professional forms for Aston Villa in September 1970 after his apprenticeship with the club and was a regular member of the side that won the Third Division Championship in 1971/72. Brown stayed with Villa for five year making 75 league appearances and scoring 1 goal.

In October 1975 Harry Catterick signed Brown for Preston and made his debut in a 1-0 defeat at Brighton on 11 October and played in the next 8 matches. Brown returned to the side at the end of January to appear in 19 of the last 20 matches as PNE finish eighth. His only goal of the 1975/76 season was from the penalty spot in a 4-2 home win against Swindon on Valentines Day.

The following season saw Preston finish two places higher with Brown making 33 league appearances. Brown scored two league goals, the first again at home to Swindon in a 2-0 victory on 8 February and his second also at Deepdale in a 2-1 win against Grimsby on 5 March. His other goals came in cup competitions the first in the opening match of the season as PNE lost a League Cup first leg tie at Bury 2-1. His second goal was at Anfield when Preston beat Crewe 3-0 in an FA Cup First Round second replay tie.

The 1977/78 season saw Brown leave Preston and made his last appearance in a 3-2 win at Deepdale against Rotherham on 27 August.

Brown moved abroad to join Greek side Ethnikos before returning to England to join Portsmouth in February 1980 on loan.

Brown only made 5 appearances for Pompey but help Portsmouth achieve promotion from the Fourth Division on goal difference above Bradford City . The fans took to Brown in those five games and at the celebration in the Guildhall Square he received a raucous reception with chants of 'gives him a contract'. But the board did not listen and Brown moved on to Hibernian.
