Player Profile – Paul Cross

Paul Cross was born in Barnsley on 31 October 1965. He started with his home town club as an apprentice in the early 1980’s. Cross played in the youth team that reached the FA Youth Cup Semi Finals and Quarter Finals in consecutive seasons. With Cross, former PNE goalkeeping coach Andy Rhodes was also in the team.

He signed professional forms an October 1983 made his debut at Oakwell in 1983 in a 3-2 defeat against Cambridge after being two up at half time.

Cross stayed at Oakwell for over eight years but during his time there had serious injury problems leading to be sidelined for a year due to a cruciate ligament injury.

In September 1991 Cross went on loan to Preston for a month as he was not getting into the Barnsley team regularly and was coming back from injury.

He made his PNE debut in a 3-1 defeat at Birmingham on 28 September and then was the left back which saw the Lilywhites win the next three matches against West Brom, Bury and Huddersfield. His fifth and last league match was a 1-0 defeat on 26 October at Fulham when he was substituted for Neil Williams.

After 119 league matches but no goals Cross joined Hartlepool for £20,000 in January 1992. He made his debut in a 2-0 victory over Hull on 1 February and made 21 appearances during the 1991/92 season as Hartlepool finished mid-table in Division Three.

The following season Cross made 36 appearances although he only started in eleven. One of his first eleven appearances saw his debut goal when he scored to make it 1-1 against Exeter on 7 November 1992 in the 49th minute. Exeter won the match 3-1 with ex PNE player Ronnie Jepson scoring the third.

Cross made a further 16 league appearances in 1993/94 to take his tally to 74 appearances. His last appearance was a 2-0 defeat at York on the Football League Trophy on 9 November 1993. At the time Hartlepool had a lot of problems behind the scenes with a scandal involving the chairman and the clubs finances. The manager was sacked and joined Darlington.

Cross decided to drop a division and followed him in November 1993, he was immediately made club captain. He stayed with Darlington for two years before having to retire through injury. He made 39 league appearances for Darlington, netting two goals. He was injured through a bad tackle against Hereford which injured his cruciate ligament, medial ligament and tendons.

After a year in rehab he decided to hang up his boots and has since been a commentator on Hartlepool and Darlington matches for the radio.
